window treatment fix

I need to replace my window treatments and wondering if plantation shutters are something I can do in my space. I’m changing the silhouettes and want something with more privacy but also something my dog won’t destroy.

Just looking to see what some options are. Plantation shutters seem more durable. Thoughts?

Shutters are not what this room requires IMO.

How does your dog ruin things? Even though Beverly has the right idea for the room, it may not survive the dog. If that is the case, then go with the plantation shutters, providing you are able to easily open/close and adjust the veins for light control. Your sofa seems close to the windows so important to consider.

The dog is a whole other post but he jumped up this morning seeing a dog and put a whole through. The sofa keeps shifting back after pulled away from wall/window.

Everything in your sitting area sits in a similar value range which is beautiful but a bit flat. You can add more personality by replacing some of the accent pillows and placing a larger tray on the ottoman. Here's the look with plantation shutters:

You can also replace the rug with one with more contrast.

    ^Nice from lisedv.

WOW!! I am loving that first photo lisedv!!!! And I’m loving the look of the plantation shutters…. I struggle with rug selections. Is this a rug you can suggest?

    Not the abstract rug preferably.

Do all think the shutters work? I do like!

Perhaps a vintage rug similar to this. You can coordinate a few accent pillows to the colours in the rug. Magnolia by Joanna Gaines has a few but unfortunately being in Canada I don't have access to her collection.

BTW Wayfair Canada carries Joanna Gaines rugs why you would want one who knows I don't like any of her style . As for the shutters I dislike them people in Calgary were ripping them out almost 20 yrs ago, they block view they are heavy and are really expensive and I have no idea how big the dog is but their nails can scratch that finish on those shutters pretty easily . I agree you could use some color a few less pillows too

The dog is very large. He has done damage which I knew he would in his young years. I don’t want anything that can be destroyed but pulling the sofa l away from the window could help: I need to find a way to anchor it in place. The shutters are pretty and have a clean look. I understand your point tho.

    @Colleen

You can also consider motorized roman shades

This is pretty too. We did have honeycomb shades prior to the silhouettes.

I had plantation shutters throughout my last house. Ours were split so that you had the option of top open/bottom closed. Re ”blocking views”, I don’t understand, where that comes from?! Seriously. We had OCEAN views & I wouldn’t have wanted them if they did, those views are very expensive , lol. Ours were wide vaned & didn’t have the center stick ( whatever that’s called ) because our home was modern. Maybe people in Calgary were tearing them out 20 years ago but they’re very popular here where I live, both in coastal So Cal &:in the Palm Springs area. BTW, they make vinyl versions that look like the wood ones if you’re worried about your dog.

Hold the fort! You have another post going on for the same dilemma, and there is a dog involved?

Why would you start another post?

Pull out the sectional from the wall; no phony plants; rug is too small; black leather ottoman a bad choice. Draperies hung to the ceiling height.

If there’s another post it’s from a long time ago, nothing intentional. I love the plant and the rug is not too small. It fits the room. The ottoman is brown. I’m not looking for draperies. I am in a fishbowl and looking for window coverage.

The rug is under the sectional, but the end table is on the floor. The ottoman, black or brown, is over sized for the space. How could a gang sit and have room for their legs? And the tray...?

Try removing the rug and the ottoman. Pull the sectional out from the wall. That will allow you to have a window treatment.

My end table is on the floor also! So is that a felony in designer world? BTW, I’m not going to debate rug sizes ( since I’m not a ”pro” ) but I will tell you what a designer friend of ours stated ( she’s based in Newport/Laguna Beach ), the new trend is to not necessarily have all furniture/ legs on the rug. Just relating what she told us, not here to argue the point.

Honestly this post was just about window treatments that my dog damaged this morning and this picture was pulled from an old post just to get some quick resolution while I headed to work. It’s bad enough that I need to spend more money to correct it but now to learn everything is all wrong LOL.

@Colleen ,,,, just ignore it. You’ll get a lot of “don’t” on here. Just do what you want & what makes YOU happy. As I stated on another post, a few of our friends dislike our very modern MCM house & furniture, artwork, etc. Oh well …. I’m not crazy about their “Grotuscan” houses either, but I find something to say positive, as difficult as that is sometimes, lol.

Yes, a beautiful dog, I’m jealous, lost mine ( 16 + years old ) not long ago. Btw, Colleen, I have a list of @ least a dozen “No No’s” that will see on this site on a regular basis. They’re very predictable, always the same answer to certain “dilemmas”.

    Awesome dog .

Thank ya’ll! He is rockstar beautiful - helps his stay here :). I didn’t want a dog, but he was abandoned and we took him in. Biggest challenge ever - he’s an Alaskan malamute - ENERGY!!! Thanks K Laurence. You are so right! The guidance on this site is amazing but I have to take some bad with the good.

And I’m so sorry for your loss K Laurence.

I would worry that the dog might scratch the plantation shutters and they‘re expensive in my book (but i can admittedly be a cheapskate) you mention privacy - is that just at night or also during the day? also does the dog tend to jump at the window just during rhe day or also at night?

It’s only during the day. The shutters might be a saved bet then what I have now. Privacy day and night. All depends on the say, but I do like to be able to close them day or night when needed.

Because I have a dog, I' ve found that the safest window treatments where a dog might look out are….vertical blinds. Fabric or…gasp…vinyl, get pushed aside by puppy dog noses and no damage occurs. My husband is the destructive one because he doesnt slide the blinds open before he goes through the slider, but the dog hasn't damaged them. Verticals are perfect for privacy when needed and light control. I'm aware they are ”not in style, but I predict theyll be back because theyre practical.

    FWIW.......: )

Raise the silhouettes to appear as roman shades during the day. Privacy from what? Is the neighborhood safe? I'd not be inclined to rob you , seeing him in the window!

The room and furniture isn't suited to curtain panels, mostly cut off by a sectional. I'd be very wary of a dog lunging at plantation shutters when the bottoms are closing the view , but the pup knows someone is walking past with a dog in tow.

As to inside? Yes to more contrast and interest on the couch and far fewer pillows! Understand the need to put your feet up........but the heavy leather is killing your vibe. Try a round, upholstered even, in a color jooooooh and let that be a cue to pillows: )

PS........ a trip to Home Depot, and a boards ( a 1 x 6 or 1x 8) cut to a foot long increments ( or you pick ) and laid flat on the floor behind the back FEET of the sectional. will fix it forward position....)

We have sun filtering roller shades. Also a wild beast of a dog who presses herself into the windows regularly. She hasn’t destroyed them yet but I also tend to leave a spot for her to peak through. I like your room. It looks cozy and inviting.

You've heard it all now. Bottom line you want plantation shutters and the only way you will know if they do all you think they will for your room is to bite the bullet at get them. Curtain panels hung just above and beyond the window frames is what the room is calling for. Color and something sort of on the walls. Why no art? Dogs seldom ruin art on walls.

Is there space on the walls for art? Between the windows and entry it looks quite full. Where would you recommend art go?

If feasible (even if you have to remove a side table), I‘d move the sectional away from the window and add a sofa table behind, which will give you more options. Don’t use anything tall or breakable when accessorizing.

During the day if you don’t need complete privacy, keep treatment high enough so it’s out of reach.

Jan thank you! I would love that ottoman and see your point.

I do want art work! I don’t have a good eye on selecting prints sadly, but yes do think we need it!

I don’t think a sofa table will survive my dog. He’ll leverage it for access to the window. I do like the woven shades but then would need panels and like others said, they would swallowed by the sofa.

Your biggest problem is that you have a large dog that needs to be outdoors where he can run and play. He will never, ever be happy living indoors, no matter how much love you give him. If you love this dog, find a home for him where he can get exercise and fresh air, and live a good life.

What? Dogs spend a ton of time sleeping and being lazy. They run and play when they are outside but they don’t do it 24/7 and they happily live in homes all the time.

Thanks today! I guess I have an anomaly then. He’s an Alaskan malamute with high anxiety and the struggle is real :)

Woodrose77 we saved him after finding him tied to a pole on a beach in February. He’s very happy.

@colleen I was saying to woodrose that their comment is off. Dogs dont need to be running free outside all day to be happy. And most dogs do live primarily indoors with their families and are in fact happy.

Ah, I see that and thank you. Somehow the decorating topic derailed.

For the window coverings, what is realistic with the dog? Ours is a bit out of sight it of kind with her barking approach. We frosted our front windows by the door and she rarely barks now. But out back she seems to think there is always someone or something there so letting her see out keeps her calmer.

Can someone suggest art for my walls? I need something to the left of the front door and the corner of the living room. I do like soothing comfortable colors and would want it to blend with the kitchen which has sea-foam panels. Do you suggest I bring in that color?

    Can either work?

Thank you JAN! I changed the ottoman to your suggestion and it opened up the room beautifully! Still need suggestions on window treatments. Would plantation shutters work? I don’t want brown shades. Trying to keep the room light and airy and can’t have anything in the window that my dog can and will destroy. Seems plantation shutters could work aesthetically?
