Picturesque. I've only seen mistletoe on trees rarely, and I think it was only well south of me, like in the Carolinas or so.

Impressive. Was there a whole lot of kissing going on under that tree?

I don't know. Presumably it's been building up for a long time. It might eventually prove too much.

I've only seen mistletoe in movies. Interesting to see it growing in the "wild."

The largest number of mistletoes, I've seen in a single, large tree was maybe 3 or 4 as we passed by at 65mph on the freeway. Generally, one or two is the norm, where I've been.

I'm now thinking the tree is an ash. Fraxinus excelsior. The one beyond with less mistletoe is a Linden.

No mistletoes in my area (southern MI), but I had some spare time today and decided to do a little research just for fun.

European mistletoe (Viscum album) apparently has quite a broad host range (over 400 different tree/shrub species). It has naturalized and become a problem in parts of California.

American mistletoe (Phoradendron leucarpum) occurs throughout the south and ranges west through NM, AZ, CA, and OR:

Eastern Dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium pusillum), is much smaller than the above species, and causes witch's brooming on spruces (primarily black spruce). It ranges from the Northeast through Canada as well as northern MI, WI, and MN:

I read avout an project in Germany ages ago where they tried to track soil contamination via mistletoe-"infection", they found a correlation between weak trees/ poor health and the degree of parasitic Viscum album by arial? fotographs

few years later someone from a forrest department did a somewhat similar study counting mistletoes on aerial images and rating the vitality of the forrest or some such

the Viscum draws water and minerals but does its own photosytnthesis, so to my knowledge it is rather an indicator of problems, not the cause
