Need Advice for Bedroom

I just moved into this new apartment and I’m stuck on what I should put on this side of the bedroom. The window shown is pointless as it’s just showing a brick wall to another building. So it’s being used as a shelf right now and As you can see the dresser I bought doesn’t really look the best beneath it. In the corner I tried to do a cute little mirror thing but now it just looks (very) wrong with the carpet. I’m not good at this but I really love designing and I want to get better so all advice and ideas are welcomed!

The door you see in the photo leads to the bathroom. The entrance to the room is on the other side.

Is the mirror working for you to see your outfit? Would it work as well on the wall? What I see is beige walls, a pale, beige-ish rug and a pale not-far-from-beige dresser. It is, IMO, screaming for some color. (Note, I'm not in to soothing, which some might find your colors, so if they are great for you, ignore my advice). I'd add some color. Probably red. Maybe with a rug, maybe with bedding. A poster on the wall, if you can't hang the mirror on it. A cloth on your dresser.

window is ugly like that. sorry. pretend it's real and do a window treatment.

move the wood thing over. or look on offerup or others for something taller. you have a very tall wall and little storage. do a large unit.

on the other window, get long drapes that touch the floor. the rod should be 4-5 inches above the window frame

do one large area rug, not small mismatched ones.

    unless they're like this

Hi @Sigrid. The mirror reflects a lot of light right now so it’s hard to see myself up close. I definitely agree with you it needs some color. But I think I want to make sure the furniture is right before I add any art or other decor. Thanks for the help!

Hi @beth I know idk why they put a window there! I just took down the curtains because I was thinking of doing a DIY shelf for it? Also I like the idea of the carpet but I have a big one already under my bed so im not sure how good it would look. Thanks!

I would pretend the window is not there and cover it with a piece of art.

Start with showing the ENTIRE room please, all angles?, Seems to need some help beyond the window.

The dresser needs a few coats of PAINT., and perhaps the walls as well.

Bedrooms like all other spaces need windows one of which has to be an egress window regardless of what is outside the window. Take real pics of the space no fancy camera stuff a to scale floor plan always helpful too But for sure we need to see the whole space .As for the window do a drape or blind just like any other window just leave it closed . How do use that space for makeup with no mirror and all that stuff htere needs a home thta makes sense .

Show don't tell (doorways, furniture, rugs).

Voice of experience here: The time may come when you will appreciate the cross-ventilation you can achieve with more than one window in your room. In the meantime, I think your room will look more finished if you dress both (all?) your windows. I also think it will overall feel more homey, and less like "why is this here"? After a while you won't notice the oddity so much, because curtains or blinds will give it a sense of normality.

Playing detective: I don't know where you live, or when your building was built. Could the building across from your window have been put up after yours? That might explain what seems like an oddity now.

Possibly interesting historical tidbit: In New York City, and some nearby towns such as Hoboken, NJ, that window would probably be in a tenement, and the space between the two buildings would be an alley or an airshaft.

Thank you everyone for the feedback! A couple of you were asking for the overall so I hope this helps. I plan on replacing the curtains don’t worry lol. Excuse the mess and excuse the tv stand it’s unfinished - that is an ongoing DIY project that I’m finishing up once it gets warmer. And sorry I love watching tv at night so that’s probably going to stay there for the time being :p I know that doesn’t help my case haha

@amystoller I live in Chicago :) My building was built first but you’d think they would design for the future!

Following this one. Romney, if you measure out the room and include dimensions, you’ll likely get better suggestions. Your room seems huge for Chi town!

Ask and you shall receive. Here are the measurements.

Apparently air shafts were a feature in Chicago tenements as well. Not that it would seem to apply to your building. I survived my days with a brick-wall view (in tenement railroad flats in Hoboken, NJ and Hell's Kitchen, NYC), and eventually was able to upgrade. Your room is a lot bigger than either of mine were, so you're ahead of the game. Enjoy!

I agree that window coverings are needed. As mentioned, your dresser seems quite small, is that enough storage for you?
Otherwise you have that tall wall. Perhaps you could put a taller unit on that wall. The mirror is out of place…..not very

big or wide. Can you mount it on the back of the bedroom or bathroom door? I do like your rug. Maybe coordinate some bed
    pillows in coordinating colors.

Thank you for the graphic. We also need photos of all four sides of the room despite the fact that you're only asking about the window. Commentors, many of whom are professionals, enter a room and take in the "big picture.". Sometimes a change in layout can solve a separate problem that seems unrelated.

Hi @housegal I sent two more overall pictures in the comments. Do those not work? Thanks!

Hi! @djacob I thought the dresser would look good underneath the window but I stand corrected.

Thank you for giving us the "big picture." To sum up, here's what others have suggested and to add to it, here are some tweaks for the space:

--Warm ivory curtains and bamboo shades for both windows and your doors. Walmart, JC Penney, and Target have affordable curtains. Run them from almost near the ceiling to the floor. Move the dresser forward so the curtains at the brick wall window can fall to the floor.

--Get a corner TV cabinet off Amazon and put TV where mirror is. You can put TV on a swivel to get a better view.

--Get new bedding in a light ivory. Add a throw in an accent color. Add an art work over the bed or on a blank wall. society6.com has very affordable framed art in many styles, colors, and themes.

--Go to a thrift shops or check Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist for nice painted or wood matching night tables with drawers for extra storage. Lose the random stands for substantial pieces that add storage. Paint in an accent color.

----Very often bedroom rugs are brought forward to add pattern to a room. Your room could look like this. Note the white curtains.

Another thought about art: Museums often have wonderful prints and posters. They look a lot classier framed. Framing can be very expensive, but posters tend to come in standard sizes, making it possible to DIY your framing for much less than having a framer do it. I bet you can find fantastic stuff at the Art Institute of Chicago—assuming you like that sort of thing. (I do, and I love the Art Institute, but you're entitled to your own interests.)

Furniture: Housegal200 made great suggestions. Are there good flea markets in Chicago? If so, they might be worth investigating. Another option is Habitat for Humanity ReStore. For myself, I've found terrific vintage furniture on Etsy and eBay. The prices were good value, but I wouldn't call them cheap. And shipping definitely adds to the cost, so you'd want to factor that in to your budgeting.

If you like the dresser where it is now you may consider adapting the brick wall view window to boost eye appeal.
Try a roman shade or patterned blind and clip a mirror panel sized to fit exactly into the lower glass panel.
Easy and cheap solution; you can still open the window for ventilation and the mirror part gives you some primping space.
Pick a pretty pattern for the shade which you can raise or lower to your desired lighting level.
It may seem outre but worth considering to increase usage of available space.

What's beyond those double doors with the horizontal blinds?

A visual of my suggestions... For a calm bedroom, creamy colours for your bedding, creamy curtains with bamboo roman shades on each window, same roman shades for the french doors, corner cabinet for TV (about 210$ on Wayfair), larger area rug. A new more contemporary looking fan would also be a nice touch.

I think you need to scale back. The TV stand dates the space. Move the dresser to the wall where the mirror is now. Either paint or stain that dresser. Either mount the TV on that wall above the dresser on an articulating swivel arm or if you can't do that get a swivel riser for the tv that you can sit the tv on and swivel it to angle towards the bed. Or just place the dresser in front of that huge window. Its large enough to handle it and place the TV on top of it. That will help disguise the size of that window. If you do this hang the mirror on the wall to the right of that window.

Treat the window you are using as a shelf as a window.

The large window to the right of the patio doors is so overpowering I would place a roman shade inside mounted on it and keep it neutral to not bring attention to the large height difference between it and the patio doors. If you can pull the wood blinds I would do roman shades on those too. IKEA has them for a lot of different sizes.

Consolidate all your little storage carts into a bedside chest or one cart you can roll in and out of the closet as needed.

lose the small rugs. They are not needed. One large rug anchoring the bed is enough.

Art work on your bed wall and a bed with a headboard.
