How do I decorate my daybed?

last month
  • I ordered this West Elm Shelter daybed for my bedroom. I intend to sleep on it, and I'm ordering extra fabric to make a mattress cover that I can take off and wash. Of course I'll put on some decorative pillows and maybe a throw-sized quilt since I am a quilter. Opposite the wall where the daybed will go are floor to ceiling windows. The rest of the furniture is almost all mahogany antiques. I had had some lightweight white silk for years, and I used the silk make curtains. I

thought I would make a duvet cover to use when I sleep. Questions: Shall I do a patchwork duvet cover or a cover made out of the same fa

bric as the daybed or something else. Should it be bright colored? Should I buy enough of the velvet to make curtains for the windows or is that too matchy matchy? This room is where I guilt, sleep, use my compute,r and frequently I eat. up here

This looks far too small to be a comfortable bed for sleeping on daily.

Too late. I have paid for it. I slept on a youth bed for a year and was quite comfortable. The daybed comes in two sizes. The one I bought is 32x86. A twin bed is 38x75, Did you want to make me feel bad:)

No, I want you to reconsider the plan as it is makes no sense. And adult buying something like this to be their full time bed is bizarre. Even just from the fact that it doesn’t have a separate mattress so once the cushions give a bit you are out of luck, I also doubt it was made for nightly sleeping on. Having something like this in a space to lounge on and read or relax on is what it is used for. If you feel bad having purchased this perhaps wonder why.

I would not call that a day bed. I would not consider it to be anything but extra seating and useful like a chaise lounge is useful. As to your questions, sorry but there is no way to look at that piece of furniture and imagine any of the bedding you are debating on it. We are not sharing your vision. Sorry.

Pretty room. I have to agree with Kendrah to create a nice cohesion with matching drapery and day bed.

A daybed usually has a back that does no look to be a standard mattress but no context in the pic so hard to say. It would be good to see a pic of the room maybe from the door right now it looks like shots from an antique store I knew ir you are the person with too much furniture and wanting to add a bookcase. I honestly have no idea what you are doing . IMO a bdroom needs a bed daybeds work for kids or at least one that is made to take a proper sizd mattress

Consider getting a twin foam mattress topper to place on top and get a couple pretty flat sheets that can be used to cover the seat cushion and topper.

If you like the white of the drapes, then keeping the bed white makes sense.

I would have gone for a dark red or dark blue performance velvet upholstery, and drapes to match. But I see nothing wrong with your taste, it's just different from mine, and it's your room; you're the one spending time there.

Given that you're keeping the white, I think a solid cover (can you pick up one of the colors in your rug?), rather than a patchwork, would be my personal choice. Your room is quite busy as it is. But again, this is a matter of personal taste: I will nearly always go for the least busy option, so consider the source!

Your furniture is all very nice but is it all in your bedroom? it would be nice to see the exact room where the daybed is going (all 4 walls) and the floor to ceiling windows you mentioned. We don't see your room, the daybed is nice but all we see if furniture.

Some people like to sleep all sprawled out in a king size bed. Others like a smaller, more compact sleeping situation. As long as this daybed is for just you and no one else, there’s nothing wrong with that.

I like your daybed. I wouldn’t decorate it much, though, because it’s small. A quilt would be fine or maybe quilt toss pillow covers instead.

Given its only 32” wide (vs 38”) and basically 11” longer than a twin (less given the arms), I’d have a custom cover made, as the sides and the back are going to eventually be affected from body oils, etc. Suggest a washable, simple but interesting cover over its entirely (adding your sheets over).

@jck910 How can we answer that question without seeing the room?

Thank you all for your concern about the size of the daybed. Usually when I get up in the morning, only a small part of my double bed has been messed up. As I said, I slept in a youth bed for at least a year and was perfectly comfortable. The youth bed is smaller than a twin sized bed. I had a mattress made to order for it. I'll send pictures of the room later today. I have two appointments' today so I don't have time now.

Once in a while when I can’t sleep or I don’t feel well I retreat to my 22” wide x 85” long very firm MCM sofa. i’ve been told by others that it’s too firm, not comfortable,, etc., but it works for me. I get it.
