Primary Bath Refresh

last modified: 17 days ago

Hello Fellow Houzzers! Would love to hear advice and suggestions from you on how to refresh / restyle our Primary bathroom to make it feel more like a spa retreat or just more elevated. It hasn't been touched in 18+ years (raising kids so no time to personalize the space, and also somehow everyone takes a shower here despite kids having their own bath/shower combination, LOL.) The bathroom overall is in great shape, and layout works perfectly. We'll be replacing all light and water fixtures, mirrors, adding a rain shower and a handheld, improving ceiling lights as well. We won't be replacing countertops or tile anywhere (floor or walls.) Open to repainting the cabinets although they show no wear or tear and could stay as is. Would love to hear your suggestions on paint colors, wallpaper, fixtures, window treatments, accessories or any other ideas that would help us make the space elegant, cozy and timeless. Pictures are very helpful. Thank you so much!

Refresh can mean different things to different people. What exactly do you want to do?

A problem in this room right from the start is that you're installing random light bulbs. Lighting is bit more complicated these days and the bulbs have to match.

Gosh the cool bulbs just make your space look terrible.

The cool bulbs make your bathroom look like a morgue. And that terrible runner on the floor doesn't help the situation.

The mirrors selected should have been larger.

Some type of texture wallpaper could pull the room together. I tried to find the various veining colors in the marble top for the wallpaper.

I've just edited my post. When I added the photos after I had written the text, I didn't realize they posted right over the text, so I had re-type (-: thank you!

I agree with Beverly about the lighting. I suggest wallpaper with a pattern, not a textured plain color. The pattern could pick up colors in the way Beverly suggests. I just think pattern could be more "refreshing" than plain.

agree with @lisedv on a light spa feel.

Let the vanity be the standout. I'd sample SW ALabaster or BM Swiss Coffee, depending on you paint brand choice.

Lighten up the space, bigger light fixture over the mirrors, MUCH bigger mirrors just a beveled edge, no frame for a clean finish.. I'd stay with the brushed nickel hardware or even polished chrome. remove all the black accents. a patterned roman blind in a color and or pattern to soften the look.

I would definitely up date the lighting. I would love to see larger mirrors with sconces instead of those overhead lights. Please take off the beadboard paneling. If you like the divided wall, then do a nicer wainscot panel instead. Replace the runner, find a new home for the steamer. I don't mind the wood stained vanity but if you do paint it, then change the cup pulls and knobs.

I think those few things can make a huge difference!

    Good luck

@lisedv pics paint the image in my mind.

It is tempting to go for something fun and very different by using wallpaper, but in here I think a spa feel will be much better achieved by nailing the right paint color on the wall.
I'd keep the beadboard and paint it the same as your wall color. You will have a nice bit of texture but the room won't feel as chopped up between upper and lower.

Go lighter and brighter with towels, benches, larger rectangular mirrors, and ample light fixture above the vanity.

Not sure why you need to change your sink faucets.

Purge the contents of your vanity and declutter the countertop. And kick your kids out of here into their own bathroom!

Spa clean and uncluttered is where you start. The mirrors are odd then lighting bad . Waht are the things sitting on the floor near the shower ? The tub area is not inviting with odd stoolls and mismatched towels . De clutter change the wall color to something soft and plae blue. green maybe . Get the kids to bring caddies with their stuff into the space and take it awy at the end of the shower , maybe that will get them using their own shower A nice stack of white fluffy towels on a chrome shelf maybe . I agree paint all the walls and trim the same color . Simplicity is what you want . A nice fluffy rug no pattern maybe just a bit darker than the walls Maybe the vanity painted but it can works as is Largr mirrors and new light fixtures for sure

Thank you, everyone, so much for your input and helpful advice! I've been living with this bathroom with the attitude of "I'll give it some love when I have time" ...It has become an afterthought for so long just putting things in there temporarily, and they just stay there and don't compliment each other. A couple of kids are now in college, so it's time to live it up! I promise I have taste! (-: See the primary bath I designed and procured all on my own for a project my husband and I did just recently (photos taken just before the house sold, so it has not been lived in, but I have those fluffy white towels still!) That project actually gave me the push to take care of my own bathroom, but it is hard to see the forest past the trees after such a long time of neglect, and also trying to stay on budget and not demolish solid cabinetry and good tile. I agree on many of your points especially on going clean and simple and keeping the beadboard and wall color the same (never liked the contrast of wall color followed by a piece of white beadboard followed by rich color of the countertop.) Cabinet knobs and faucets can also stay, but I'll change the pulls for something a little more modern. And lights and mirrors will be updated for sure, and maybe even a small chandelier /pendant over the tub. Yes, the lights are horrific; they'll be replaced with sconces and the appropriate warmth bulbs. Our drawers are not cluttered, and I can certainly purge the content on the countertop to move to drawers. I love trays and have them all over my home, and most of my countertop things are on trays actually, which are probably hard to see in the photos. I'll share the after photos. It may not happen soon as we are refreshing a few other things, but I can't wait to get this done! Thank you again for the ideas and for wishing me luck!

I think you could really brighten the space by changing out the countertops to a plain off-white or cream quartz.

You said you have space in drawers, but recessed medicine cabinets provide everyday storage right in front of your face.

My bathroom with Cambria White Cliff counter and 24x48 recessed medicine cabinets.

The White Cliff counters in your bathroom would bring the white color of your tub to the other side of the room and balance things out. You definitely need more/better lighting. Paint all walls a lighter color, get rid of the rug and you are done.
