How to divide shrubs that have colonized

I have a small thicket of fothergilla in front of my house. It started as a drift of five shrubs but over the years has colonized into one big mass and is encroaching on some other things, so I've got to work on size reduction this spring. I'd like to be able to save some of what I dig up to fill in down by the road. What is the best way to go about this? I figure the best plan of attack is just to dig out the perimeter to reduce the size of the mass rather than lifting and dividing and re-planting "shrubs", then I'd just plant the severed pieces elsewhere. Sound like a viable plan?
