Coco Chanel is famous for saying: before you leave the home, look in the mirror. What do you have too much of? Take that item off. Translation: when we have plenty going on already, we don't need to add more. This space may seem blank to you but to your eyes, it's a place to rest. Certainly no shelving. If you absolutely must put something in this space, consider a very calm and minimalist huge peice of art. Art …. you need some color in there, & maybe add a live plant to the room ( I’m a plant lover, lol ), & shelving is the last thing that room needs.

One big piece of art that you love. Also suggest rearranging your wine glasses so that they are not all in a row across the two shelving units like soldiers. Minimal or no items on shelf below art. Nice room.

Oh a plant woild be lovely in there. I don’t dislike the photos but I love a home with photos in it. Makes it feel real and lived in. Also my buffet has at least half a dozen photos on it which I adore looking at as I go by.

I love family photos in a home too, and have them all over my house. I just think that they are lost on that shelf and especially if a large piece of art is there, they will be insignificant.

Select a large canvas for the wall to capture the attention of those in the room.

If a large piece of art seems daunting, you can always put up 2-4 related pieces. Just remember to heed the earlier advice about not doing anything too busy or distracting. There is a lot to look at on this wall already. Sometimes it's hard to find something you like for a space that is exactly the right size, so being flexible might help.

Best if you want elegance that never dates is to go with elegant molding for this room.

Not what you asked, but maybe add glass to the top cabinet doors too, for greater height/presence (and put something in there, which I didn't do in the photo)? Hang draperies outside of the bay, just under the crown, for the same reason? I also added recessed lights around the ceiling perimeter (possible?), for sparkle, to balance the lighting in the room, and to light the artwork.

I will also address the glass front cabinets. Find a few pieces of your best crystal or serve-ware that has some color and interest. Group together. The blue and white ginger jars are nice but would be more impactful in one cabinet. Do you have any other pieces for the other cabinet?

I love the light colors and personally find the black chandelier jarring. Maybe crystal with brass instead of black? A modern (cloud-like?) shape could add something delightfully unexpected.

The painting and sconces are a big improvement; the overly styled cabinets are a big miss. They’re too impersonal and overly “decorated.” Look back at what you had/have and group like with like for more impact. Edit, edit again, and ONLY if necessary, look for an interesting vintage piece or two to layer in texture, color, and interest.

All I can say is, yes, art could be an option for that wall. Although, my choice would be a mirror to add light and expansion and to reflect the gorgeous chandelier (if you still have it).

I would hang the mirror high enough, so that the two people seated opposite the mirror wall would not see themselves while eating.

I prefer the moldings and a grass cloth wall covering. Very pretty room. Please post final project.

The OP’s chandelier does not need “updating.” And I, for one, would not be “relaxed” in that room that you posted, @simplynatural.

Your chandelier is beautiful and dramatic. It makes a statement. The idea is: let it be the centerpiece that it is designed to be, and just complement it. Keep it simple. As Leonardo da Vinci said: “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

You could do this with art, or a mirror - as I mentioned in my first comment upthread. There, I included a visual with a mirror. Here, is one with art:

The art could also be bigger, if you would like. It could take up the entire space. I would not use sconces. The chandelier is enough.

You could add additional subtle lighting in the cabinets, if you would like to do so. The things that you already have in the cabinets are fine... You do not have to bring in a bunch of “stuff” to stage the cabinets.

ETA: It could be any art that you like. This is just one example; and this one shows that you could go dramatic on the art if you wanted to. Etsy.com is a good resource - for all types of art.

I kind of agree. I don’t mind the bronze chandelier. Especially in person it looks ok. I think I’ll try to find the perfect artwork. Then see if I actually need the sconces.

Your chandelier didn’t really come across as black to me, when I first saw it; so it’s good to know that it is actually bronze. Plus, with the high content of crystal, and the candles, it balances out the darker metal - to the point that you hardly even see the dark metal. But if it were wrought iron, for example, it might appear darker - but in this case, it would still have the similar effect, because of the rest of the design elements (lots of crystal, etc.). In any case, it’s an elegant, dramatic piece. The black chandelier in the AI visual looks nothing like your chandelier. It has more of a heavy metal black look, and very little crystal, etc. - which can also be fine - except, it does not work with all the other design elements in that AI visual. The room just looks beyond overdone... and that black chandelier just looks totally out of place.

That’s a good plan - to find some art, and take it from there. Get art that you love... not just something to (literally) fill the space.

I think it's a nice chandelier, but it's hung too high. I'd lower it--ideally it should be 30" above the top of the table. But I also think simplynatural's idea of a more modern chandelier looks nice too. There's no right or wrong, just personal taste.

I would say that your chandelier is hung at a perfect height. Lower it much more, and you couldn’t put flowers on the table.

In this visual (that I also included above), I used a relatively minimalistic flower arrangement. The flower arrangement is pretty low in height.

Also, personally, I am not a big fan of a huge chandelier sitting right on top of my head (or any light fixture sitting right on top of my head, for that matter). In general, I personally prefer chandeliers that are hung relatively high; this is for a number of reasons - including that I think it’s a more gracious look.

There are no rules for how high to hang a chandelier - only guidelines.

If yours is not on a dimmer, that could be a nice addition, if possible. Dimmable option is good to have, with any chandelier.

As far as lighting in the cabinets: A couple of puck lights could be easy. Amazon has many options; some are available with remote control.

2or3much smaller colorful flower arrangements on the runner may be worth trying .. balancing out the color elements… creating a more attractive dash of color

As I understand it, the first image in Diana's post above (^^) is an actual photo of the room before changes, with the actual chandelier and its actual position. The second image is an AI drawing of the changes planned for the room, and AI did not correctly render the chandelier as it actually is. OP says the moldings shown in the AI image have been installed and painted, and the art and sconces shown have been ordered. When everything is done, hopefully @cmarsi3 will post an actual photo of the finished room.

Yes that’s exactly right! So what do you think of the existing chandelier? I’m conflicted because I do still like it and I don’t want too much gold in there. That room is off my kitchen which has a gold light over the table and two gold lights over the island.

I tend to prefer less formal rooms, so I would change the chandelier. And for me, consistency of metals with the adjacent kitchen would be a pro, not a con. But obviously others feel differently. Which makes you happiest?

The blank portion of the back wall screams for a gorgeous painting. As for the chandelier, it is formal (as is the dining room) but a specific style. If you don’t love it, consider something with less crystals. That would make the room more modern. Your new choice can really change the feel of the room.

Love the Crystorama…brings a big splash of originality…and lowers the feel of formality…..( since you obviously use the room for a work area) plus it adds a great shot of color of color to a very muted setting

Whether you replace the crystal chandelier or not is totally up to you. Personally, I'm not a fan of a lot of crystal, so I would try something different. But there's no right or wrong, it's your call.
