I would agree that a good first step for your goal of brightening the room would be to add more colorful pillows. Focus on colors in the artwork above the sofa, so the pillows lead you right back to the artwork. If you were to change the rug to a lighter one, you would visually lose the contrast of the shape of the furniture against it. The current rug you have provides great contrast. After you select some pillows to tie into the artwork, if you still want the room brighter, there are more modern abstract and colorful rugs which could be added. But the rug you have could also work. If the pillows also have some of the rug colors in them, that is a plus as well, for cohesiveness in the room. It's helpful that you have a small table between the two chairs, but once you change out the coffee table to a square table, you might want to consider a very narrow rectangular table between the two chairs, since most of the lines in the room will be right angles.

IMO a contemporary rug with a lighter background would help the room. I'd also add a tree in the corner. The mirror makes no sense to me.

If I had to change anything it would be the art above the sofa. art is a personal choice, and I get that. but I just don't think it's the right piece/size for that spot.

I'd go w/something a bit longer (2/3rds the size of the sofa) and a bit taller.

Your rug is pretty classic but it is dark. Will suggest same style but lighter colors.

Keep the current rug (easier to clean than the sisal) and the round table which balances all of the perpendicular lines of the furniture.

It is a nice piece of art above your sofa. I wonder if a lighter color matte and frame would make that whole wall feel lighter.
