How do you coordinate rugs in a floor plan like this?

I think the rug under the dining room table is too blue or bright? I can change that one out if needed, but not the one in the living room area. If it’s not right, could someone please guide me to pick a better one? Thank you.

Christina, can you post close-up pics of both rugs? It looks like your dining room rug is long enough but not wide enough? What's your budget for a new rug?

A dining area rug should be wide enough for a chair to be pushed back entirely on the rug so, yes, the rug is too narrow.

The way you get any piece to harmonize is to take the dominant color from the first piece and make it a background color on the other. Here's a YouTube on how to pull this off:

Do you really need a rug defining the dining area?

I'd remove it all together and see how it looks.

without seeing the whole "living space" rug, I wonder if you spin it with just the front legs of the sofa on the rug it will appear larger, looks crowded, you have plenty of room for a larger rug to extend into the room.

I don't love the blue rug either. It feels too cool.

I have often used the same two rugs in one room. I'd do that here too.

I agree that the dining rug should be wider.

I would recommend removing the rug under the dining table, as it creates a cleaner and more practical look. Another good option would be to replace it with a new rug that complements the living room rug and is slightly larger for a more cohesive feel.

Your room could use some tweaking

As for the rugs, there are companies that sell rugs in a related colorway.

No rug is needed under the dining table.
If you feel you need color, add patterned drapes.

Find a rug you love for the LR and no rug for the DR then it is easy.

Thank you all for your help and input I really appreciate it. I did hire a designer when we did the initial remodel. We went to the store and picked out some furnishings for the living room then she abandoned us, lol. She was supposed to come back and stage it for us but no return calls - nothing. I’ve never liked the rug that she picked, and I’ve been struggling with it..

Hi “lisevd”, may I ask why you went with green in the living room and not blues? Not questioning your experience just wondering why. The reason I ask is my kitchen and den area is green and I was trying to do different colors. Is it better to carry the green throughout?

I picked the green because that was the only colour I could see in the pictures you posted with the green stripe armchair.

The additional pictures you just posted seem to be an entirely different area since the sofa I see is charcoal.

Can you post more pictures so I can see how those two areas related to one another?

I don’t get a lot of natural light in the house.

The chair strips are supposed to be black, lol. But my husband liked them so they stayed. That can easily be seen as a blueish gray IMO.

Oh, the 2 armchairs looked like an olive green on my screen but the colours seem much better on the new picture you posted. I'll take a look at all of this tomorrow.

Maybe switch the china cabinet and the dining room art, so the two art pieces don't compete as much? Add a chair at a 90-degree angle to break the parallel lines of the rugs? Choosing a strong blue chair could help a blue rug work (although I agree the dining room rug, if any, needs to be wider). Warm-colored sofa pillows could balance the warm-colored dining room art piece, and matting/framing the sofa art (as Beverly suggested) could give it more presence. Sofa end tables and lamps could be taller. (I see that colors are very different in the various photos posted, so color will have to be judged in the actual room.)

Your kitchen & den area seems to be separate from the living/dining area so you can go with the blues you like. The hutch does look nice flat against the wall but I'm under the impression it's a corner unit. I suggest a larger area rug with some cream/gray/blue colours, larger art on the wall hung lower above the sofa. You can also place lighter colour decor in the hutch.

    Thank you so much

I like it much better without a rug in the dining area, as in lisedv renderings, which are lovely,

I’ll keep working on it. Thanks again for everyone’s help.

Is there any possibility of adding a dining room chandelier over the dining area to help further dilineate the area? I would also look into removing the ceiling fan from the center of the room if possible. As is, it looks as though it wa meant to be one big space that was turned into two.

I would love to do that and I have a vintage chandelier that I saved from our old house to use there. Unfortunately I have more pressing issues that I need to deal with first to get the house sold. If there’s any money left, I will definitely do that.
