Gross toenails/fungus

last month

After removing my toenail polish, I have gross big toe fungal nails. I'm going to want to wear sandals soon so I have an appointment at the podiatrist this week. What treatments have you done that worked? I've had ingrown toenails on these toes, and she wound up removing my toenails over the years which is a little traumatizing, so I'm hoping I don't have to do that again. Also trying to plan for Pilates, other exercise, etc. I bought some kind of pen off Instagram and IDK if this will work, but I am using it.

Thanks, and I'll spare you photos of the grossness!

Thanks, Annie. Oh yeah, that's part of the problem, going barefoot has been next to impossible it's been so cold and then I pretty much live in athletic socks and sneakers. At least the past few days it has been warm and I can get out my socks.

Are you sure it is a fungus? I guess your derm will let you know definitively. Mine get dry spots when I wear polish all the time. It looks a little fungal, but it is just dry spots called keratin granules. I go polish free from October-ish to April-ish. Then periodically during the summer, I’ll go without polish for a week or two.

Wash your feet with an antifungal shampoo also. That in conjunction with the Lamisil has worked for DH.

adding that I rarely, rarely wear athletoc shoes and my feet do not sweat so I’m lucky to never have had this problem but my MIL and DH both had terrible problems getting rid of it.

I've also been using Lamisil. I never have had this before, but my armchair googling seemed to indicate toe nail fungus. I've been using both brown Listerine and Lamisil and it does seem better. I have less than 1/4" more to grow out.

@Cathi Thomas I forgot Brown Listerine! My momma fixed her toe nails with that. The rx’s have horrible s/e . Beware. The OTC are much safer and yes to the Nizoral shampoo. all safe very effective! c

DH has tried it all - Listerine, Tea Tree Oil, Lamisil, FungiNail, etc. If it's deep within the nail none of those topical treatments work - maybe so if it's mild and superficial. There is a topical prescription medication that doesn't have the side effects of the systemic med but wasn't covered by our prescription plan. Our doctor said you probably have to use if for at least a year. I read something from a reputable healthcare institution - can't remember which one - saying they were trying drilling holes into the nail to get the medication into contact with the fungus inside the nail. That prompted me to get DH one of those heel callus grinders so he grinds the toenail down and uses FungiNail. This seems to be the most effect means of at least keeping it from getting worse.

If someone could develop a safe and effective treatment for this it would be a blockbuster drug.

Thanks, everyone. I will see what the podiatrist will do this week. I've read about lasers for fungus. I just am not looking forward if she needs to remove since they take a year to grow back.

Don't be like me and think, "oh it's almost gone, I can use polish". It always comes roaring back.

I had my appointment. She ground down the nails and will prescribe a stronger topical. So not too bad and I could’ve done Pilates today but I canceled just to be extra careful. At least she didn’t have to remove my toenails. But yeah it can take awhile and just avoid salon pedicures in the interim.
