A chance to update my bedroom

last month

Try not to laugh at me and my bedroom pics, I've always been given furniture from the people around me so its been a blessing. I'm a male and have a decent size bedroom. I want to make it cozy, cool, fun, contemporary, and not overly crowded. I am not looking for too many bright colors but it depends.

In the room: There is a queen size bed no headboard. Barebones.

An African rug that I would like to keep.

There is also a wooden dresser and night stand gifted to me. They're pretty old. And that's is.

I want: I black out curtains for privacy. But it will have a satin curtain to let light in of course.

I want a nice platform bed(king size I think). I took measurement and it seems doable but not a done deal. I saw one on Wayfair- Farmhouse King Platform Bed(black). As long as it's not white/cream.

I'd like to add my 55' television later and a small book case for my books.

Also the wall is gray-ish. Light gray I believe.

I appreciate any and all ideas. I am a simple person so I am flexible. Right now I feel like my room is a storage place. And I do have a g/f so I would like it to be more pleasing.

Thanks.

It would hep if you would take pictures of the room standing in all 4 corners looking in and draw a floor plan on graph paper showing the measurements of the room, including all doors and windows. Do you want to keep the dresser and nightstands or replace them? What's your budget?

katinparadise has given you excellent advice. I hope you will take it, as that will help everyone here to help you more effectively.

You might consider echoing colors from the rug in some of your other textiles. Think about layers of each color—sheets, pillowcases, duvet—rather than patterns using all the colors. You will need new bedding for your larger bed, so look for golds and browns, and maybe some creams. Maybe your curtains can be gold-colored? You don't need to do every thing in the room in those colors, but a few of the larger items in those colors will help it look tied together.

Incidentally, your rug is not African, though it is ostensibly "African-themed." It is available at that website named for a South American river.

Thanks. Gold and Brown is a good suggestion. Cream doesn't sound bad.

I don't mind the dresser or nightstand. I can clean it or get rid of it. My budget as of now is near $2000

Not sure why you would make such a weird comment as if you speak for me, and all males and women.

Got a chance to measure as suggested. The opposite side of the room from the window measurements was a little longer. Is that normal.

The way things are going these days, that's a pretty tight budget.

If you want to look for new furniture, you're probably looking at new-to-you. I'm not on social media, but I hear there are a lot of Freecycle groups on Facebook and perhaps some of the others. You might be able to find something that fits with the direction you want to go in.

Even bed linens are pricey these days. You might be able to find something at Ikea:

    https://www.ikea.com/us/en/search/?q=king%20sheets&filters=f-colors%3A10019%7C10042

It's too bad the SANDLÖPARE is for kids only, and only in a fitted sheet. If they had flat sheets you could have taken a few and had them made up into the right size, and a duvet cover. But the HAMPFLOCKEL and INDIRA and maybe even the HAMNSENAP have possibilities.

For the drapes, is it the richness of satin that appeals to you, or the shine? If it's the richness, also consider velour or velvet. Even a heavyweight linen or linen mix can look very rich. Expanding your search there may give you more options.

Thanks will definitely make it work.

If you love the rug, you could perhaps hang it on the wall as a type of tapestry/piece of art behind your bed. That would save you the cost of a new bed and new mattress while adding interest and letting you spend your money on new case goods.

Man, those are some great pics. Although not for me, they give me ideas for themes and how I want my room to look. I think contemporary is perhaps the wrong word but no matter I know some place locally that can help make bring my room to life. Thanks.

I think tetheridge0315 is really on to something. I wish I'd thought of it myself! If you hang the rug as art, you are less bound to use its colors in other parts of your room—though you can absolutely still do that if it appeals to you. Since art doesn't have to match room décor, you'd have more freedom to choose another set of colors as your "grounding."

I'm glad to hear you have a good local resource. Those aren't always easy to come by, so I'm happy for your good luck.

"The opposite side of the room from the window measurements was a little longer. Is that normal."

Yeah, it's less than ideal, but very common. Not one thing in my apartment is 100% true/square/even/level. Fortunately things are mostly not so "off" that it's readily apparent, but in a few places it took a bit of work to make things that aren't level look level.

Two thousand dollars is a lot of money, but mattresses are so expensive. I would look for black contemporary nightstands and good curtains first. I did like Amy’s velvet idea. That has the potential to be cozy, sophisticated, moody, or fun depending on what color you choose. It seems we aren’t saying the name of that one online marketplace (I’m not sure why, but I’m totally in support!), but they’ve got some really nices ones that are definitely more expensive than they look.

tetheridge0315, I'm not saying the Name of that Online Marketplace for personal, philosophical, and political reasons. Also, they hardly need the advertising, now do they?

Budgetary constraints are real. If That Place is your best shot at getting what you need, do what you've got to do. If you can find another way, I hope you will, but it's not my call.

You're so right about the cost of mattresses. Yikes!

Can you stand back to take pictures of all 4 walls in your bedroom. A floor plan with dimensions including windows & doors would definitely help but at least give us the size of the bedroom so we can determine if the king size bed you're considering fits nicely in your room. Please also show the rug on the floor so we can see the colour.

@tetheridge0315 your suggestions are really great and with my budget I can do quite a lot if I buy smart. I have a sis who can get me some things and shipped them to me.

That place not mention, I don't do social media so not an issue. There's antique/booths shops with various goods including headboards, frames, arts. I will keep my idea simple and feel like I'm closer to starting and ending this project in less than a month.

    Thanks.

Just a plug to get some chunky lamps in there so you have cozy lighting, check out Wayfair for some lamp deals - I’d keep them super simple - black or cream (not too skinny and not too small)

A scale plan would help determine if the king size bed will fit nicely in your room or not. Here's a picture I had posted yesterday but somehow looks like it did't post.

@la_la GirlYes. Exactly that. Keep it simple. I order some black comtemporary dressers that @tetheridge0315 suggested. Order some stuff from Wayfair.

Order a new king size bed given the proper measurements I will have more than enough space. Wish I done it years ago. My back would've thank me.

@lisedv That's a nice pic but I'm going to hang my rug instead. Thanks. Cool idea though

I applaud your thoughful efforts to design a bedroom space that is restful ,cosy and ergonomically pleasant.
Whatever colors you decide on,do remember:
KIng size bed will take up space, take longer to change sheets, need longer pillows or a third regular pillow in the middle, and cost way more for linens.
However,it is soooo nice to be able to spread out!
Headboard is useful but I would not get a footboard(too restrictive).
Using smaller rugs on each side of the bed will be more useful than having a huge rug gathering dust bunnies under the bed.
Try to get nightstands that are at the same level as top of your mattress for ease of placing stuff with minimal arm movement and bumping around.
If you read in bed you want lamps that put the light where you need it,and are easy to turn off and on.
I do like the african themed rug you have now...cheetahs are fascinating felines.
You may want to use that rug as a wall hanging.
I have never been a fan of art work above the headboard...you see it only when entering the room..and should avoid it in earthquake areas.
Better to have a gallery wall that you can view when in bed and brightens your awakening.
Take your time to select curtains or blinds that fill your requirements...it is a pain to have to replace/change them.
Do show us what you have done!

@lisedv - You have thick skin!

I'm so glad @tetheridge0315 suggested hanging your rug. I was honestly going to suggest the same. If you like it, it's a great way to show it off. I'm excited to see how your room progresses.

For all those who been giving me great suggestions I truly appreciate u. At my heart I'm a minimalist type person. And I do like colors although not overwhelming. ISo hearing all these suggestions is really cool.

    @katinparadiseThanks. I can't wait too.

@lisedv I measure it(62X85) and I don't think I'll hang it. Way too big. I'll save it for the den. But I still want that theme somewhat for the room or perhaps/orange/black/violet/creme, etc to go along with my black dresser and nightstand. They will be black and I loved the way their made. Found the one I liked on Wayfair.

@rosiembog I did decide to hang it but now... I'm not sure as suggested by @tetheridge0315. @rosiembog I don't think I want rugs on either side tbh. I will have plenty of room for my king but I'm still on the fence. I can afford and I have room but is too much for me?

We'll see. I'm not rushing things. But I like your idea about the sheets and pillows(costs)and the nightstand being above the mattress as that is an automatic thing for me. I haven't pulled the lever on the King just yet. We'll see. The footboard will be low/even but I might not used it for either. I don't want to make things too complicated.

If you are a minimalist then what you show is a far cry from that. I need to see the whole room please with all the lights on . IMO what you have shown is confusing with the style you like so pics of the space are a must. Maybe something like this with the rug hung on the wall behind the bed and thta is it for the whole BOHO type look

@shirlppThere was no style to what I shown. It's just a room for now. I come home from travel work and things are thrown or kicked in the corner. That is why I want to update/improved my room. I want it to be a real room.

And yes I am an minimalist

If you hired a designer that person would visit the room to make suggestions and that is why so many of us are asking for photos. You'll get better suggestions by showing the room since we cannot be on site to see it.

Patricia Colwell Consulting, there is a difference between a minimalist way of life and a minimalist aesthetic. It's entirely possible for one to live guided by minimalist philosophy without one's home looking like it belongs in the latest "japandi" catalog.
