Advice for exterior design in CA

last month

First picture is how the house looks today. Second picture is my design idea, made with AI. We are in CA, and want to update the look of our house to be simpler and more modern. Plan is to replace both types of wood siding with stucco, and replace the windows. The bottom of the windows above the garage can't be moved any lower since they are bedroom windows (bottom of the windows will be 24" above the bedroom floor). Planning on CHI wood-look steel garage doors, and try to find similar color wood-look siding to place on the ceiling of the entryway. Planning to paint the whole house, including paint the existing gutters to match the trim (the dark brown color), and add (fairly small) black numerals with the house number above the right garage door, near the right side. Any advice? Thank you in advance!

I am not a pro, but I like your mockup.

I would consider a two tone solution for the paint.

I like it ( i like modern ) but I think you should consider a landscape & hardscape upgrade when fund$ allow. i think it would look good to extend your front walkway out to the lawn area parallel to your driveway, maybe pavers, simple flat ADA compliant ones in a color complimentary to your house., you have enough concrete already with the driveway. i would do either black or dark bronze modern light fixtures. How many #s in your address? Error on the side of larger & consider mounting them vertically in another location. More modern look.

Smart call on the ”wood look” garage doors, real wood look terrible very fast unless maintained OCD.

I like your ideas. Suggestion, the windows look kind of stark. Trim in the same tone as the facade, and maybe a bit lighter paint color?

Actually, I don't mind the color of the house as is. Couple of tweaks, go with the wood garage doors

"… add (fairly small) black numerals with the house number above the right garage door, near the right side. Any advice?"

Don't get small numerals. Get large numerals with adequate contrast to the background, that can be read from the street easily, so that EMTs, the fire department, and the police can find you in an emergency. This will have the additional benefit of helping the USPS and delivery services, to say nothing of your friends and family, to find you as well. Consider lighting them so the numerals can be read at night. You may wish to consult your local fire department to see if they have preferences. I do know that horizontal layout is preferred by first responders. Vertical is harder to read.

Also, don't put your house numbers where plantings are likely to grow big enough to obscure them.

Nice transformation, but it might be interesting to introduce a mix of materials or a few complementary color tones to add a bit more contrast. That could bring additional depth to the façade while still keeping the modern aesthetic.

The AI picture is rudimentary and lacks in detail of design (as expected). So questions:

    • I am not clear on the bedroom windows. Is existing 24" above floor, and proposed to remain there or to set the sill lower which would be 24"? If you do not want fall protection, there are methods that might even help the aesthetic, e.g. a low fixed window and operable upper window.
    • Why are you eliminating the transom windows that follow the vaulted ceilings, which express the aesthetic consistent with the overall design? What is the height of the existing header between the window and transom, and is the top jamb of proposed windows going to be higher than 80"?
    • Your rafter tails are exposed to the roof sheathing all around the house, so if you add T&G to the portico, how will you address the remainder of eaves, especially where they meet the portico? Do you have functional venting in the bird blocks?
    • Is the existing small roof over the right garage door strictly faux (e.g. vs added later to, say, cover up joists that extended out for a planter)?

I am a big fan of more windows not less. I also like monotone homes with wood accent. I like the idea of the soffits being wood like the garage door colour. Our house is one solid colour hit two different hardie styles. I feel like this breaks it up a bit. I do agree that bigger house numbers is better. Where are you located?

Thank you for all the great advice. Here is my revised design-- let me know what you think! Thank you in advance!

    To answer 3onthetree's questions:

    1. Existing windows are higher than 24" above floor. New windows will be placed lower.

    2. I don't like the look of the transom windows (they look like eyebrows) and they are too close the roof. Top of proposed windows is not higher than 80".

    3. The T&G on the portico ceiling will stop before the soffit (this is not shown accurately in the AI rendering, but there is a natural place to stop on a rafter). The soffits will be continuous around the entire house, as they are now, and painted the same color as the walls. There is no venting in the soffits or portico ceiling.

    4. Yes, strictly faux, or at least I hope so! We will find out :-)

You may want a more modern look but something about your house's massing and composition reminds me of Greene and Greene designs in California. Would you cons

ider using their style as inspiration for your home. Here is one of their designs.

I think your design idea is a vast improvement over the existing house.
