135.5” wide kitchen with island — round 2.

A while back I posted a kitchen layout and got some really thoughtful feedback from @Buehl, @chispa, @eam44, @ktbrown, @rebasheba, and @AnnKH. Much of which I resisted because I thought the room was too small for an island, and the view from the sink is the reason we've been here 20 years. Thank you all for sharing your ideas—even if it took me a bit to catch up.

Fast forward to a few months of imagining being able to access wall cabinets without the impediment of the peninsula corner—I just can’t unsee it, lol. Of course they were right. The kitchen would be so much more functional without the peninsula.

Here’s the original thread for context.

I’d love fresh eyes on the current plan—especially whether the aisle widths feel comfortable and if the island reads as functional (not too skimpy). This layout allows me to keep the dining table in front of the left window, so no seating required at the island. And we measured and re-measured— these dimensions are accurate despite what the floor plan shows in the original thread.

Of course, all insight is welcome!

It looks like your aisles are too narrow for an island. You really don't want to be less than 42" (inclusive of the overhang). Your aisles appear to be 39" (I think the counter overhang is included in this) and 41" (44" - overhang).

We have a very similar layout and I agree your aisles are too narrow. Take a look at my pics of dishwasher open and fridge for reference. Our between island and range wall is 52” and beteeen island ajd fridge is 48” so more than yours.

Mine are 40” wide & I think they're a little too narrow, put in by previous owner. I agree with the 42” + recommendation.

You also have to remember you image shows your fridge and oven flush with counter which seems unlikely.

A couple of things would be big nos for me I never like a sink directly across from a range , no spices or oils stored right beside the range and the walkway in front of the fridge needs 48" and IMO if you insist on the sink and range directly opposite with aslo a DW that walkway IMO needs to close to 54" and min 48"

I love my spices and oils being in a pull out right beside the range. It’s perfectly located and handy. We have cutting boards and pans on the other side. Also love.

@WestCoast Hopeful—I see your point about the refridgerator to island distance. That's about the only fixable clearance. The island is 9'6" and i could bring it down to 9' giving me a 48" aisle. I could also recess the cabinet depth fridge by stealing a few inches from the laundry room, or just shrink the island down a few more inches.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting — the cabinets are more or less placeholders at the moment. First I need come to terms with the island and aisle dimensions. I could slide the sink a little closer to the fridge. I wanted to keep a long surface to the left of the sink for serving, etc.., and still have enough counter space to the right of the sink for splashing.

I'm open to other layout suggestions if this is truly unworkable.

@klaurance, which aisle do you have at 40"? Range to island?

@ gardener123 … yes, & also DW to island., the worst is the refrigerator to island, only 32”. I can live with the 40”, but the 32”:is waaay too narrow. Previous owner had big square island plopped in the middle, a rectangular would have been better.

@klaurence thanks so much. Do you think I could live with the 44" cabinet face to cabinet face?

My concern about the back side of the island is more about aesthetics.

There’s a doorway opening where the sink is shown, so the island will sit about 3' along a wall, then 3' across the doorway opening, and then another 3' with 39" of clearance to the wall. so it's not a long closed corridor. The 44" on the other side is why I haven't finalized the plan, since I can adjust the refrigerator to island dimension. The contractor said we can assess and shift the island forward before it's installed.

Thanks @Main Line Kitchen Design for the input. The kitchen has a 12' barrel ceiling, with the refrigerator centered beneath it. The current unit is 48", but I’m planning to switch to a 36" integrated refrigerator to allow for a larger pantry. Right now, food items are scattered across multiple upper and lower cabinets
