How to make modern farmhouse more timeless?

last month

We are planning a custom home. We like the modern farmhouse look but fear it will go out of style and look dated. We like traditional farmhouse (big porch, symmetrical) but all the nice inspiration photos have no garage. Our lot requires we have a front facing garage. Any ideas and inspiration pics for a more timeless looking farmhouse, how to ensure we don’t do anything too trendy (or already out of style!)? Here is an image I like where there is symmetry and the roof makes the porch look wider despite having to share space with a garage. But it is the harsh black and white contrast that we need to avoid?

We are planning a custom home

Who is "we"? Are you working with a design professional, builder, or is this a DIY project?

Your inspiration looks like 2 different houses -- first and second floors.

Aim for good architecture, no matter the style.

For a more timeless looking farmhouse, look back in time.

If you don't want a trendy "modern farmhouse," don't do a white house with black windows. That look was interesting when it first appeared, over 10 years ago, but it hasn't aged well. A real farmhouse can take many forms, depending on where it was located. If you build something that is architecturally appropriate to the area it will always look like it belongs and will get better with time.

If you're building a custom home, tell your architect what you like. Show photos. Just because you can't find a photo of a house you like with a garage doesn't mean that your architect can't visualize and design one for you. They are visual people.

That inspiration photo has to be an AI Frankenstein house ... a bunch of different styles stitched together to create a monster!

A flat roof is probably not a good idea in many parts of the country.

So many ”modern farmhouses” with black windows are painted entirely too bright of a white. Going softer is such an improvement.

Yes ,we are working with a builder and an architect. I'm trying to establish an idea of what we want prior to meeting the architect and fear that my ideas are a little disorganized and/or that we are drawn to things that are nearly out of style or too many disparate styles.

Very helpful to think about staying rooted to the more traditional farmhouse. I agree on steering from black white (in favor of warmer/earthier, like off white and light black or even bronzes). Will also avoid too much board-and-batten and shiny metal if going with metal roof. If anyone happens to have any traditional farmhouse photos with a front-facing garage, I'd love to see it. All of the photos shared here have already been very helpful, thank you all.

Traditional farm houses with an original attached garage are very rare. Rely on your architect to design what you need.

This has been so overdone the last 10 years and you can add on another 2 years before you actually move in ... I would look for some other inspiration. Maybe drive around the historic areas of your town/city and do an updated version of those houses.

At least this one isn't white and will age better.

What is the definition of a "Modern Farmhouse" ?

What do you like about the idea of a farmhouse? They never had forward facing garages, for obvious reasons. Think about what you like in a home. When we built our image in our head ended up being different than what we ended up with. Partly because of budget, partly lot restrictions ,but mostly because we liked hear was designed for us.

My favorite homes are uber simple and have lush fantastic landscaping.

Most houses being built by me have all of these disparate elements tacked on the front and then only a sad few boxwoods for landscaping

    :(

I think simple, disciplined design ages well

Fwiw we just built on a lake with lots of older homes - we said we wanted a simple, old school cottage look (we wanted the house to look like it belonged) we sent a few inspo pics and then the architect designed the home based on that and site conditions

You can't get there from here.

To make a modern farmhouse more timeless, focus on simplicity and balance rather than trendy details.

Stick to a neutral color palette like whites, warm grays, and natural wood tones that age well over time.

Use classic architectural elements such as symmetrical windows, simple rooflines, and durable materials like wood, stone, and metal.
