Living room layout

last month

This is a 1950s home in Saint Augustine, small home. I truly enjoy living / working on this home, making it my own with what I resource. Please be kind.

This is the entrance of my home, the living room and the kitchen is opposite of this room. What’s driving me nuts is the bookcase (it’s actually two pieces stacked on one another in the corner it seems crowded. But idk where else to put it or get rid of it

I am all for big TVs, but this one looks too large for the wall and overall space.

I'd remove all the clutter and take a picture at night, when the windows are making everything else look dark. What' going on with the curtains? If you need them to be shorter, chop them off. You can get iron-on hemming tape if you don't own a sewing machine.

It's always hard to tell how big things are in pictures. Is the end table by the sofa square? I would move it to inbetween the couches. I would then move the stacking table in its place. I'd then move the other units to centre under the tv. I love your fan/light..

Do you even need those curtains? There's a blind already. Get rid of the curtains and use them somewhere else more appropriate or give them away.

@Erica C I love your plea, "Please be kind." So this is your "family room" or what we called our "TV room"? For your TV viewing I would think the glare from the opposite window would be problematic, but there's really no other place to put the TV. So, I would prefer floor to ceiling room-darkening draperies over your blinds.

I can't tell... is the main entry to your home to the left just to the left of the window? One of the first things I read in all advice regarding room layouts is to know where the traffic flow is and to arrange furniture to channel traffic as well as not blocking traffic.

The second thing I read often is to know the function of the room. This seems to be your TV and relaxing room.

The third thing is to get everything out of the room, at least mentally, and get the seating right. I can't tell from the photo if there is enough room to consider turning the loveseat(?) on the left and the coffee table to be perpendicular to the TV so it would be opposite the other loveseat and would create a better conversation area while still allowing easy TV watching from a reclined position. This could help channel traffic if my guess is correct. And you could actually consider using the checkerboard hiding in the coffee table. How interesting and fun!

Don't get rid of the bookcase until you have worked through the other items, especially since it is actually two pieces. for example, if you turn your loveseat, it could come in handy as shallow storage behind the loveseat or replacing deeper items currently in front of the TV. And if you have floor to ceiling draperies you may find the tall bookcase looks more at home. You may find it better to put the bookcase on the wall with the TV and hang the art to either side of the window on the far wall.

Don't be afraid to try pulling your other loveseat forward off the wall to line it up better for an additional TV-watching perch. There may be more room for other shallow storage. It would be great to hang your art on that wall, especially with room darkening floor to ceiling draperies.

I love your area rug! I bet it looks great with the dark seating when the room is tidied up. You have a lot of interesting pieces, and you seem to be a genius with houseplants. I am curious about the tall item in the corner opposite your bookcase. Is that a light even though there is a lamp near it? Once you get the seating settled, the lighting will be very important. You don't want it reflecting off the TV at night. These tall lights may be better positioned flanking the TV at the ends of the loveseats.

You may find you have too many little tables in this room or the wrong shape/size. My guess is you have other tables all through the house, so it might be just a matter of getting the seating right and then finding the right size and number of tables for this room, switching them around. They are all such characters! I love them.

You may want to provide measurements of everything and information about adjacent doorways and rooms if you want more help from the real pros on this thread.
