Top Loading Washing Machine

last month

We have a Miele W4842 front load washing machine. It is 13 years old now. The door doesn't latch anymore (iffy) - A call for them to come and fix it will run about $300 to $400 - and no guarantees.

A new machine cost aroung $1000. I was the only one maitaining the machine - wiping the door/ gasket etc. So want to try a top loader so I can just leave the lid open (I know there is still some regular maintenance to it too)

In the market for a top loading washer. Our friends bought an LGWT7300CV a couple years or so ago and are happy with it - so I figured for one time in my life I don't need to do any reserach to buy an appliance!!! - So wanted to but the same machine. I think its an impeller kind no column inside machine). Trying to buy the same machine but cannot find the same model - any idea what the current model is for this machine? I have attcahed some pictures from their machine.

Just want to go to Costco and get one but cannot find a similar kind.

Any help or advice appreciated. Not stuck on LG - don't mind Samsung either....just when I thought buying the same model was piece of cake!!

None of those brands have the good reviews of a Speed Queen.

If your friend’s model is a few years old it may not be available anymore. I’ve had two LG top loaders and been very happy with them. We had the first for six years and left it when we moved. Our current set is 8 years old—no service calls on either one. We purchased both at either Lowe’s or Home Depot.

The SQ TC5 Classic is the only SQ to get. 25 year life. A 2017 previous used one will have years and years of life at 500 or less. 700 was the price for an AWN432 that year when the new models were introduced. In 2019 the TC5 was brought out when the totally new others offered today received major consumer backlash because they don't get clothes clean.

Speed Queen does have very good reviews. I looked at them when we needed a new washer several years ago but the inventory wasn’t good. I ended up with an LG top loader and have been happy with it. I wasn’t stuck on LG; it just fit the features I wanted. Good advice I was given is don’t shop for certain brands since they ALL have negative reviews. Shop for the features and price that fit you best. It’s worked nicely for me with appliances in general.

Just checked…it’s been almost 10 years since we got the LG washer and dryer. Time flies; I was thinking maybe six years. It still feels new! Much better than the Whirlpool we had before that gave us 4 years.

I had a maytag for years, sold the house to friends of friends and the machines are still running another 14 years later without fail. I now have Samsung front loaders and love them.

    Who knows.

A replacement door latch shouldn't cost you more than $30 (Miele sells the part) and instructions on how to replace it are available on line. It does not look like a tough job. The parts are available here: MSD

Find a good video and decide if you can do it yourself.

I don't envy you this task. "Shop for the features you want". I wish I had been given this advise. Who knew they make machines that won't let you soak a garment anylonger. No matter what we do the dang thing drains with in minutes of filling--yes even unplugged. Who knew it hates to fill with water. Seems like and oxymoron to attempt to wash clothes with as little water as possible. We should have shopped big box stores vs appliance stores. It would have been cheaper and possibly I would have invested in a machine that functions like one expects at washer to!!

We have been buying LG appliances lately. Hubby is making the decisions because Hubby is the Chief Cook and Clothes Washer. Yes, I know how lucky I am. He likes them because they DO get good reviews. That is his primary drive on EVERYTHING. I don't even dare suggest a business or product without reading reviews or telling him to. Our actual experience with them has been good too. We have needed no repairs on any. I've lost track of time and don't know how old they are.

The other thing I like about them has no bearing on functional reliability. While every other appliance on the market makes horrible stressful noises (microwaves and dryers especially), LG appliances make happy little noises. Our microwave tells us it's done with a sound like a fairy waving a magic wand. Our washer makes a noise that sounds like an ice cream truck. Our oven says it's reached the right temperature with another happy noise. Our dryer does too. Only our refrigerator remains silent. I noticed the pleasant noises immediately. But it took awhile to realize they had changed my general mood. Quality of life has improved from this simple aspect.

What's the brand/model of your machine that can run its drain pump without an electrical power supply?

I got to the link by Googling Miele W4842 spart parts or door latch replacement.

When we bought our house, we had a 12-yo KitchenAid dishwasher. Over the last 15 years, we replaced parts here and there. The part was never more than $25-$30. The last part didn't solve the problem and we replaced it with an LG. But, we probably got a 13 years of life for about $100 all told for the parts. And the average lifespan of a DW is less than 10 years.

“Our washer makes a noise that sounds like an ice cream truck.”

    Yes…ours, too!

FWIW, sales people told me they sell more LG and Samsung than anything else. I also had a salesman tell me to expect 5-10 years from most washers these days. Who knows!

My Maytag that we bought at Sears 40 years ago lasted 30 years and was still working - left it when we sold the house as we were moving out of state! Wish they made them like that 5-10years is too short!!

    Ridiculously short!😖

ETA - Don’t buy a new machine based on the quality of what was available years ago. A Maytag today is far from what it once was.

The TC5 is the only model with a seperate turning agitator(big deal for getting clothes clean), the only one with the lid unlocked during operation and the one giving you the option of the most rinse water. Only Speed Queen TC5000WN. It's the only model using the old belt drive motor and two speed transmission used in the previous models for decades.

I understand about 40 years ago appliances from Maytag not the same anymore. Not buying Maytag based on that! Just a comment - lammenting the good old days.

Looking at LG WT8600CW; LG WT8400CW; and Speed Queen TC5000WN

For under 200 a Whirlpool belt drive 3/4hp model from the 80s will be available from used appliance stores. Simple, inexpensive available parts you can easily replace as needed.

I'm not very handy, so a not too expensive top loader should suffice - looks like Speed Queen is $1499 - too much so now its only two LG WT8600CW; LG WT8400CW - don't like the sloped lid though on these models for Easy Unload!! Not sure you can put anything on top of the machine!! Oh well

You won't need to work on the $200 Whirlpool or the $500 Speed Queen AWN432SP113TW04. The resale shops will have checked and refurbished as need before they sell a unit. 1 year warranty is likely. Look on FB Marketplace for Speed Queen washer and you'll likely see good options. You want stainless not porcelain tub and mechanical not electric control. It should look like this.

Like this Marketplace link. Smart shops will take your Miele in trade.

When we bought our SQ machines almost 10 years ago, the store price was a lot less than the MSRP. But I think that stores are contractually prohibited from advertising prices. But ask at your local store.
