Design Dilemma on Kitchen Island

last month
last modified: last month

To overhang or not to overhang, that is the question...

I have to make a decision on this asap. Practically speaking, because I entertain frequently and have constant houseguests, the overhang is no-brainer. People always want to sit there. Visually speaking, I don't love it. The island starts to feel like a behemoth extending into the living room and crowding other furniture. (The house is one big open room log cabin, for reference). Will I regret NOT having island seating? I mean, I guess I could always get the overhang and if I hate it, I can cut it off, right? What are your thoughts on this?

Okay, here is a view of more of the room. Keep in mind that my house is under construction. And, no, I will not elaborate as to why there is a giant cutout bear in the living room. LOL

Overhang for seating?
No overhang for aesthetics?

It would help if you would show the entire room. If the overhang is extending into the living room and crowding the furniture, it would be helpful to see the room.

It appears that an overhang would be useful for you to have - maybe there is another way to arrange the furniture in the living room so that it would feel crowded. If not, would it make sense to have an overhang on the side facing the camera where two people could sit?

Also, how many inches have you made the cardboard overhang? 15" is nice to have - however, 12" will work if that helps.

One other comment - the type of counter stool that you use at the island will make a difference re: how much the overhang area looks/feels. If you use a bulky type of stool = more room will be needed. If you purchase stools that tuck under the overhang when not in use, that will help keep the island from extending more into the living room.

Also, hard to evaluate in the photo, but what is the distance from fridge to island?

There is 65 inches from island to fridge/cabinets against the wall. Yes, I know I can move the island in but I don't really want to. I like my space in the kitchen. And when we tried that, it felt out of alignment with the other cabinets in the L configuration, if that makes sense?

I would move the island a bit and add the overhang only on one side.

get stools that fit under the overhang to limit the visual clutter.

I am wondering why you kept the island so close into the kitchen area if you planned on sitting at the island? or even spun it the other way?

I'd have made a more shallow island with over hang but that ship has sailed and I presume you have reasons for wanting it this deep. I think you need to reframe your voting. Seating is a primary function that will serve you really well and I would not skip it. I see the choices as these:

#1 - Keep the island where it is with over hang and completely crowd the living room so it looks like a complete after thought.

#2 - Move the island closer to the other side of the kitchen, reduce the vast 65" aisle, and live with feeling like the island is not as balanced as you would like with the lines of the L.

I vote #2 in a heartbeat. Once everything is installed, it is not going to feel as out of alignment to you as it does now. Your eye will be distracted by finishes and appliances. It will be fine.

I agree with Kendrah #2 option! Scootch that island closer the L!!! I think it looks weird with that much space there. Do 12" overhang.

If you leave it where it is....then no overhang.

I agree move island a bit closer to create overhang space. Going to be great!

The island is too big for the space even without an overhang

I also like Kendrah’s #2 option. Or the idea to spin the island to be perpendicular to the fridge wall/parallel to what I assume will be the cooktop wall. However without a measured plan it’s hard to tell if it would fit that way.

But of course now I do want to hear about the bear! I can only assume it’s to babysit whatever little pet uses the steps to the couch, or to keep your guests in line.
