Where can I find good cabinets in LA, OC Area?

last month

I got my plans back from my architect and I am remodeling my house. My designer moved the kitchen around so this is requiring new cabinetry.

It's going to be designed for a modern house, I'm looking for a wood design. Anyone know where I can start off? I attached a picture of the plans and reference of what I am looking for.

When I remodeled the kitchen in my previous house in Los Angeles, I worked with Shane Wilhoite at The Kitchen Factory in Studio City.

I picked them because they worked with Wood-Mode cabinets at that time, which is what I wanted to use.

Shane was great to work with, very detail oriented, and I used him again a few years later to help me come up with the kitchen layout of the house we were building in FL.

If you are hiring directly from a local cabinet-maker, they will need more detail to give you an accurate bid -- such as wood species, paint-grade or stain-grade, slab front or Shaker-style.

If you are hiring a GC to build the new kitchen, they may want to subcontract to a local cabinet-builder whom they have used previously.

If you are hiring a design-build firm for the new kitchen, they may want to source out the cabinetry to an out-of-state semi-custom supplier. Because of the CA health & safety restrictions on finishing products (e.g., varnish), there is a wider choice of finishing products for materials ordered out-of-state.

Those curves require full custom. Not manufactured on an assembly line.

You will need to go a distance to find the skill associated with those curved stiles and rails. Mark at Millwork Management has done custom cabinets all over the west coast. He's a valuable contributor to many online cabinet making forums as well. Millwork Management

I remembered another custom cabinet maker in Burbank. I used this company to make me a custom vanity for my previous master bathroom back in 2014. I wanted a Spanish style door for the vanity and it was the only company I found that could make it.

I found my notes from a meeting I had about two years ago with a local kitchen/bath showroom (LA County). They said that they would measure, order the cabinets, and install them, but I would still need a GC for all the other work (plumbing, electrical, drywall, ...). The cabinetry would exclude countertops and cabinet knobs / pulls.

The designer at the showroom said they worked with four different out-of-state cabinet companies:

    1) Dura Supreme in MN -- mid-grade

    2) Wood-Mode in PA - they had gone out of business, and came back in 2019 under new ownership; 10 to 12 week lead times; 100 different stains from which to choose; their website has a map linking to showroom locations

    3) Crystal Cabinets in MN -- considered high quality, but I later read that the quality for this company had dropped

    4) Signature in PA

I chose not to take this path because I was remodeling a bathroom and not a kitchen. I hired a local cabinet-maker who is working with my fabricator to build a bathroom vanity for me.

CA has the most restrictive laws for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). If you are looking for cabinets finished with high-VOC oil-based paints or high-VOC oil-based stains, then you will need to look out-of-state.

No one uses oil based ”paint” anymore on cabinets. That is 1970’s technology. Not even 90’s conversion varnish gets used. All modern cabinet finishers use 2K waterborne urethanes.

There you go, Rome is just a hop skip and a jump from an OC area.

    Hi Mark,

Fair point! Fortunately, distance is less of an issue nowadays than it used to be.

We regularly deliver throughout the United States, typically in around 4 days, with shipping included. If someone is looking for a well-crafted piece designed to last for decades, we believe beautiful things are worth crossing an ocean for.

Hey Greyge , any distributors in the United States? In Louisiana or Los Angles?
