I live in the PNW zone 8b. I am planning on planting drifts of lithadora, candytuft, and aubretia above a rock wall. The wall is at the bottom and runs parallel to a gentle slope in my backyard. There is a dry stream bed that acts as an open curtain drain also running roughly parallel to the slope about 3 feet uphill from the rock wall.
I have removed the scrubby weeds and grass in the area I am going to plant. The existing soil is poor and rocky with a pH of 6 to 6.5. I will be adding about 4 inches of new soil on top for the new plants.
My question is: What composition should my new soil be? Chatgpt says about 50% agricultural pumice, 30% 60/40 soil mix (sand/compost), and 20% GB soil conditioner which contains bark, a little manure and other micronutrients.
This is a long rock wall and I want to get the gritty soil correct. Any thoughts on this soil mix for these plants from experienced gardeners? Thank you!
