Kitchen cabinets…wood stained or painted?

last month

I am in the process of remodeling a kitchen of a house I bought in Prescott Arizona. I liked the present colors in the kitchen. It’s just the cabinets are lower quality, staggered and dated.. I would like them to be more uniform across the top and probably to the ceiling. We just had our former builder who owns a cabinet company here in Goodyear AZ do a rendering a new layout and we like the changes he made. So he’ll be constructing cabinets and doing the install.

I am pondering whether I want to return to a painted set of cabinets and to a dark alder island that matches our alder doors throughout the house. The second option would be to do a lighter wood color not sure what wood species just yet, as I am supposed to get together with my builder and look through some of his samples and see what might look nice with all the alder in the house.

The house is a little bit dark because of the way it faces and the overhang out back on the golf course. My builder has done painted cabinets for people. I’ve seen some finish kitchens with white. I wouldn’t do anything that stark. We are lighting up the tile in the house and paint colors too. But he seems to favor stained wood cabinets. He says he’s constantly asked to come back and touch up painted ones.

Any ideas suggestions or advice?
