PNW kitchen cabinet maker VG Fir with slab fronts

last month
last modified: last month

We were set to order our semi-custom vertical clear grain fir cabinets with slab fronts - for a very clean modern look - from a supplier in Washington state when we were told they are only doing Shaker style in VG Fir.

So far I have only found a shop in BC, Canada, doing this kind of work. We are on the southern Oregon coast.

The photo shows our kitchen with IKEA cabinets when it was new 25 years ago.

Many thanks in advance.

Try the Cabinet Factory in Eugene. They do beautiful custom work

I'm sure you can find someone in oregon that custom makes wood cabinets. show them what you want.

Thanks, theotherjaye - I will google them.

Beth H. I have been looking for months. There may be cabinet shops in Oregon, but not many work in clear vertical grain Douglas fir.

does it have to be doug fir?

fir has more red to it, can be soft and theres a lot of variation in the grain.

Do you like all the red?

what about a rift sawn white oak?

beautiful. and a lot easier to work with

I suppose you could apply a stain if you want more red to the oak

can you not get the cabs in BC shipped to you? what about custom makers in Calif or even in Idaho? that way you could have them shipped

BethH - the whole issue revolves around using CVG Douglas fir and slab doors. I’m pretty sure I explained that.

Of course, the firm in BC can ship; I would like to have options, i.e., more than one source. Thanks.

Kokeena in Portland has vertical grain slab Douglas Fir for IKEA cabinets. Link.

Taylorcraft Cabinet Door Co. Premiun book/bank matched slabs. These companies supply cabinet shops and can give you shops to contact. Vertical grain on drawers must be specified. There are grading levels to veneers like A1.

Nova Link. is a source for Doug Fir lumber for trim, etc. Forest Grove Oregon.

M+J Woodcraft in Delta BC is a supplier of custom doors and drawer fronts.

Hi dan1888 - our IKEA cabinets are 25 years old and are breaking down at stress points like hinges and drawer slides on the most often used doors and drawers. The cabinets are dated, and we have found over the years what we'd like to change in our layout.

I did look at Kokeena, but they don't build cabinets as far as I could ascertain.

I visited Taylorcraft's website - they don't offer VCG Douglas fir.

I have visited novalink, but they are a resource supplier, not a cabinet shop. I asked if they could refer me to any cabinet makers in the PNW but they could or would not.

I will check out your referral in BC.

Thanks for taking time out to respond.

https://www.linearfinewoodworking.com/ Can do anything you imagine, and they ship all over the world. The biggest limitation will be if you don't have a skilled local installer. You will need to pay them to travel to install if you don't have someone with high skills for frameless.

Your IKEA cabs lasted quite a few years. If you used new boxes in a new configuration. Kokeena will supply doors and drawer faces to fit the IKEA boxes and hardware. They should also have other trim pieces like IKEA offers for European Oak Vedhamn.

Your right on Taylorcraft. An alternative in Salem is Cabdoors. They list VG Fir on their order dropdown for slab door/drawer pricing. Not for their Mid-Century doors/drawers. They supply - Highland Cabinets Micah Horsell (541) 382-2631 Bend. Bladts Custom Woodworking Josh Bladts (541) 408-4095 Bend Link. Woodwright Cabinets Pat Jinings (541) 678-3975 Bend Made To Order Woodworking Brian Norlund (541) 382-5814 Bend Link. Check for CVG matched drawer stacks running vertically, book/bank grain matching.

Hi McDonald Enterprises - thanks so much for your referral. We do have a skilled installer in our area. I am concerned the firm you recommended is in Arizona, with a VERY dry climate compared to our high humidity location on the Oregon coast.

Hi Payton Frostad - yes, we are working with a kitchen design/install firm. The only cabinet supplier they represent that offered CVG fir cabinets with slab drawers and doors only offers this species in Shaker style now.

Minardi - thanks for the referral; I will get in touch with them, although I would prefer a supplier in the PNW to keep shipping costs down.

dan1888 - we don't want to use IKEA boxes - they are pressed board, not plywood. We used them when we built the house in 2000 - 01 because they were budget-friendly.

I didn't see any slab doors offered by Cabdoors - I need to look again. Do you have a link to that particular page on their website?

Thanks for all the additional referrals. Unfortunately, it looks like they are all in Bend, which is high desert/very dry, while we are on the Oregon coast with high humidity, so I worry about the wood coming from there to here.

What you are looking for will be a veneer over a stable super refined MDF, HDF, or other high engineered core material like Medex. There is zero issue shipping from a dry location to a moist locatin that has indoor weather control. If you don't have indoor weather control, then even materials made in a humid climate will have issues. Humidity control is a requirement for all furniture, flooring, cabinetry, millwork, and homes in general. 35-55%, year round.

Slab doors are under the Edgebanded Series .Using a veneered slab door drops seasonal movement of the doors/drawer fronts to effectively zero.

IMO a veneer over MDF or HDF to be stable in any environment that is why you Ikea lasted for 25 yrs. I use Ikea a lot in my designs for exactly that reason no matter where the cabinets go they stay stable. Plywood is not the answer BTW. I am trying to figure out why fir at all and why not the maker in BC very similar climate

I like to have options in the event something changes with the maker in BC.

Minardi - Sorry - I must have confused your recommendation with one from someone else. This system doesn't create threads - makes it difficult to suggested what. Thanks.
