All our hot dog buns are sliced vertically and have been for years. We live in a very small town, no Whole Foods or similar within an hour’s drive 🤷‍♀️

In Maine, we eat hot dogs rolls which are sliced on the top. The ”side sliced” rolls are available. I dont know anyone who buys them.

I prefer top sliced buns.

I never heard of them! I just added some to my WM order.

Where I grew up split top was the custom for hot dogs, lobster rolls, etc. When I first moved South I couldn't find them anywhere but eventually the Pepperidge Farm version made their way into the the local grocery stores.

I think they are better but I couldn't tell you why. Perhaps they are a better quality of bread?

Split top is a thing in the Northeast US. Not so much elsewhere.

Pepperidge Farm is what WM had.

It's very much regional, but as people move around and travel, I guess there has been some demand for both. My son was quite distressed when he went to grad school in PA and the only hot dog buns he cound get were top slit. He ais they fell apart on him, so guess no all are as sturdy. He grew up in Texas with side slit -- all I ever knew growing up too. Now we see some of both, but side slt is most popular.

It's a wiener taco! I shop at WF and I've never seen these. In fact, it's never occurred to me to do this, because they already come with the lateral slice. I don't load my dogs with anything besides French's mustard, but I may try it if it's cut down the top.

Yes, I buy the WF brioche rolls sliced open on top as hot dogs with toppings, lobster rolls, pulled pork sandwiches, etc. are much better this way.

I adore the WF brioche hamburger buns. Everything else seems too dense and bready.

I was just reminiscing about all the good sandwiches I used to eat on split top rolls. Now most of them give me indigestion!

German hot dogs, my favorite was a white coney. Spiedies which are a marinated pork or chicken that's cubed and cooked on a grill. Spicy Italian sausage links, also cooked on a grill, with peppers and onions. Roast beef on weck - that one was on a German kimmelweck roli with tons of horseradish.

When we lived in Atlanta near Emory, a local restaurant serving chilidogs used to cut a long wedge out of the top of the roll for the hot dog It always seemed like a great way to serve it and we have done the same (although it has been a few years since I made chilidogs)

Both horizontal and top sliced hot dogs buns are sold at my supermarkets.

Simply judging by the shelf space allotted to each type - side sliced is more popular.

Aren’t cylindrical hot dogs on any sliced roll like fitting a round peg into a square hole? I usually slice my hot dog anyway and lay the two slices flat, and we did yesterday just because we were splitting it. But an intact hot dog does seem like it works better on the top split. Sometimes we get buns at other stores (including hamburger buns) that are ”slice-it-yourself”. so now, if it’s for hot dogs, that’s what we will look for!

Agree with Jojoco, it’s a New England thing. I never see them in PA.

I grew up in upstate NY, way upstate, about an hour south of Canada. We had them when I was a child.
I always thought the roll must have come from immigrants because where I lived there were lots of second generation Germans, Italians and Polish. I just looked it up and they apparently started at Howard Johnsons for the clam strip roll. And they actually predate the more conventional hot dog roll.

My first teaching job was in a tiny town that had a sub shop. They served their subs this way sort of cut a wedge out of the middle from the top of the bread roll. With the proliferation of Aldis these buns are sweeping the nation.. I've never seen them at WM. I tend to shop the bakery section vs the processed bread aisles no matter where I am shopping. I guess I need to venture out as yes this is a much better way to eat a brat or hot dog. My MIL always cut her brats in half the long way that tends to help them not curve.

I love sauerkraut on hot dogs — the top sliced roll works.

DH picked them up from the Jewel the other day. Jewel is not your eastern, German, etc store, it’s solidly midwestern as far as I know. And yet, there they were. Sweeping the nation they are!

I got some that were like that once. I didn't realize it until I'd cut through it from the side. That didn't really work. We don't eat hotdogs but we eat bratwurst. Those didn't seem to fit into the top slot very well. Maybe I need to try it again.

I'm stll trying to figure out the distinction. I grew up in NYC , now live in Pa, and it sems whatever hotdog buns I've purchased are what I expected.

Can anyone tell me what kind I likely gravitate to? The growing up in NYC ( Brooklynto be more precise) may be the clue needed.

This is all new to me.

I tried them, but did not like the top slit. Will go back to side cut. Not enough room for everything that I like with the hot dog.
