Walk-in Shower vs. Tub/Shower combo

I am preparing to remodel my master bathroom. I am debating between a walk-in shower and a tub/shower combo. I have met with a remodeler and there is not room for both a walk-in shower and soaker tub in my space. I like the look of the walk-in shower but am also considering the resale value of switching to a 3/4 bath from a full bath. I have a bathtub in a guest room.

We always say build what works for you, not for the next people to own your house. We are also not fans of the shower tub/combo, unless you have no other tub options in the house.

I agree with the Lewis/Schoeplein comment - build what works for you, not others. Houzz has dozens of different styles of showers that can be built (and have been built). Choose one that you would really, really like to use every day. Then have it built for you, in the colors you like. If someone wants to take a bath, not a problem - the tub is just down the hall.

I faced the same dilemma and chose to make two really nice spaces (one walk-in shower in the master and then, in the guest bath, a really nice tub and shower-- Kohler Archer is nice and deep with a standard footprint). It's a lot easier decision to make to take out the tub/shower combination and replace it with a walk-in shower when you have another full bath elsewhere with a tub. My husband is thrilled with the more spacious shower and I love the spa-like tub. Win Win

This has come up a lot lately. People say "it should be X because of resale" when resale is 20 years away! I agree with people that say do what is best for you. If you go to sell the house in 10 years and its really necessary you can put the tub back in.

The reality is that people move around more now and most probably won't be in the same house twenty years from now. It is your home but it is also one of your biggest financial investments. Not to at least give some thought to resale is not wise. I do think that because you do have a tub in another bathroom it really should not effect your resale value much, if at all.

Many people put a shower combo in, only to use the shower 90% of the time.

Its a personal decision most people would say after having the combo would say they only use the tub every once and awhile

Walk in Shower for sure in the Master.
As long as you have a bathtub somewhere, which you do, this is a no brainer.
You should throw your bathroom on here with dimensions and see what people come up.

If you go for a walk in Shower you might want to consider a Shower System. A large walk in shower is the perfect space for a Shower System as you really have the room to enjoy it. Check some out here: http://faucetlist.com/Delta-Shower-Systems/ - if you want to learn more about how to build a shower system, this is a good article: http://faucetlist.com/blog/Shower-Systems.html

i always go for tub/shower because
a- easier and less to clean
b- less space (since usually people take only showers

Walk in shower all day! I just finished a complete re-do. The guest bathroom has a full tub and shower. The Master has the walk in shower. We love it. So much more room to shower. No brainer.

We just bought our house a couple of months ago, and our master had a garden tub and a separate tiny shower. We removed the garden tub and just finished having our tiled shower put in, and I couldn't be happier. I considered the same thing about resale value, but we are assuming it'll be ok having at least one tub in the house. I highly suggest the walk in shower if that's what you want. It's so worth it! I've attached before and after pictures. Good luck! :)

Given that you have a bath in another washroom, feel free to do what you want and not worry a bit about resale.

I would do what you seem to want, which seems to be the shower, especially since you have another tub in the house, and perhaps replace your existing tub with a walk-in down the road if you have your heart set on having one. Those tubs seem to have a lot of drawbacks, IMHO, but a shower with a good bench and some grab bars will work for nearly anyone. I hope this is not too late to help, but I suspect you have finished your project. Hope you like whatever you did. I love the look of the shower vs tub in the photo moico posted. We are preparing to do a shower with a bench for my handicapped spouse. We have room for only one and have only one bathroom. While a nice soak is an occasional luxury, a shower is far more practical as a primary bathing facility. Even when we had a combination the shower got a LOT more use!
