What's Missing?

I know I need curtains, any suggestions as to colors or textures? Should I move the bookcase? How can I add more color and texture to make the space more interesting? I have included a close up of the throw pillow on the couch.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. I do have this rug that I could replace it with. If I do that, I think I will have to find different throw pillows? Also, what about moving the sectional so that it is a little more centered on the window?

You have no color. That makes room appear boring. New area rug. Color try turquoise colorfast.see overstock.com.8 x10 go,roman shade. In charcoal. Add black pillows with a print add to mix already. Go a round glass coffee table 24" . Dark rectangle not working. You have a lot of very dark woods change to glass or lighter reclaimed. Add brighter accessories to bookcase.

End table next to sofa to tall. Replace with low glass.

Put floor lamp next to sofa not in corner. Add big 36 x36 art bold colors to wall behind sofa hang 8" above b top of sofa back. Looks like roman type shade on window just wrong color.

Find a rug with colors that are in those beautiful cushions?
Is sofa gray? Windows looks better with shade up. Yes remove bookcase not doing anything. Add a long 6 ft buffet in reclaimed wood it's big now. Can find everywhere google for store near you. Even world market I selling it add a big sunburst type mirror over it,after you center buffet on wall. Hang mirror 8" above top of chest. Add a palm in corner near window. Run 8 x 10 rug long part out into room.

Rug above would work, it's traditional what size? Yes move sofa into and away from walls 15" center slightly. Take a pic from sofa looking at bookcase wall.

Color on the walls and in the rug, pictures/artwork on the walls and curtains for the window.

Don't worry about pillows matching rug. Doesn't have too. Just a decor items. Mixup. Patterns and colors. It's only a pillow.

Sofa is taupe. Ignore the end table next to the sofa, that is just there for the moment. I will try putting down the other rug going in the other direction. Do you think I need curtains or just replace the roman shade that is there now? Or both?
Didn't know sofa was taupe, it looks gray. That's why I said Charcoal on window. It's fine just leave 1/2 way up.
The red rug is 5x8, same size as the rug in the picture. Do you still think it should go in the other direction?

If you pull out sofa from window then could add panels to each end. Add black rod. Add black rings to top top panel. Go a trellis print in cream and beige. Ck TJMax for rugs, and accessories. On coffee add big basket fill w/orchids . On buffet, add tall pots various size in teals, red black. Group,in 3 s on one end. TJ has sunburst mirrors and some great art. Prices are the best .

You need a bigger rug. 8x10. It will be a big impact in room. Even a chevron in taupe and white would work. Think pattern and color.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Hopefully will post some updated pics soon.

Can the bookcase be moved? I think maybe a small end table at the end of the sofa and another small chair next to it might be nice with the floor lamp staying in the corner. Pull some of the colors from the throw pillow: rust, gold, green. Add a vase that makes a bold statement and put it on the bookcase. Add a throw on the corner of the sofa. Add one or two more throw pillows in either a bold color or a pattern such as a stripe. Try putting the rug on an angle. Just because you purchased your furniture as a sectional doesn't mean you can use the pieces separately. Split a piece or two and put an end table between. How about some artwork on the walls? Don't forget the freshness of a live plant! If you want to invest more, maybe change the coffee table for an ottoman in leather. It is great for extra seating but you can put a large tray on top when you want more of a table. Some also have storage inside.

Yes, the bookcase can be moved. Do you suggest completely moving it out of the space or just moving over a bit? I don't think both a chair and the bookcase woud fit.

The bookcase might still work in this corner if you treat it more as a background piece. Place a small scale chair in front of it and the floor lamp slightly to the side of the chair. You want enough room to be able to access the books, but it doesn't have to be front and center. The bookcase might also be able to sit at an angle to the corner. Sort of like the drama created using a folding screen in a corner. What is the furniture to the right of your photo? Is it necessary or would you like the bookcase placed there?

That is a wood burning stove so that cannot be moved unfortunately! There is another sitting area on the other side of the room. It has a leather couch and loveseat. Do you think both areas have to "coordinate"?
They don't have to match. Except for wall color and windows. Rugs can be different. But use same colors. On bigger rug, Try running other way just for size. Didn't know there was a stove there.

No. I was referring to the furniture across the room from the woodstove. I agree with travisinteriors. I don't like matchy, matchy. Repeat colors in both areas, but mix things up a bit.

Color in rug, wall art, lighting, paint walls. It is so blah...Some throws and pillows will warm it up also..

Is it better with this rug? Will move the bookcase later. I don't know if I can turn the rug the other way as the hearth might be in the way. Plan on getting curtains and I like the idea of console where the bookcase is and a sunburst mirror above.

Nice rug. You can turn it and use the angled edge of the stone hearth as a guide. Sometimes when you angle a rug, it makes the area look more open instead of running it perpendicular to the walls. It looks like the front legs of the sectional will all be on the rug.

I have attached more pics with the bookcase gone and new rug down. Any other thoughts on what I can put on the wall? Any specifics on curtain color, texture or pattern? Was thinking I would like some kind of storage for firewood. Maybe baskets under a console? What about a family picture gallery above console?
How would this table look against the wall? What kind of coffee table?
    Here's a bigger pic
Here is what I came up. I think the distance between the mirror and trunk might be too big? I will be replacing the existing roman shade but the curtains are new. Will also be painting the walls.

Yes, I agree. Lower the mirror. Your artwork should be at eye level, slightly above and slightly below when you are sitting. The exception would be if it is above a mantle or a mirror in a bathroom or hallway. Then it should be at your standing eye level. The mirror looks a little lonely. If this is a chest you need to frequently get into, maybe it would be better if it wasn't centered over the chest. Then you could put some other items ( a small decorative shelf with something on it, more mirrors in smaller sizes but with a common theme, or some framed pictures) as a group on the wall. Sometimes a colorful woven art piece adds some interest to the wall. If the chest doesn't need to be opened that often, I think a tall vase/statue might look good on top. But either way, the mirror needs to be lower.
