3-Car Garage Size
Comments (6)404me--The size of the garage depends largely on how it will be used. A typical large SUV is btw. 17-18 ft. in length, so if you would like minimum maneuvering room in front and in back, I would make the interior clear dimension of the space 24' min. add 2' additional ft. for a workbench and/or storage cabinets. In terms of width, if you are designing this house to be the home where you will retire, I would say that it should be 39' clear min. for the cars/SUVs, which will allow you the ability to park an accessible van in any of the 3 bays and if necessary, deploy a wheelchair ramp. A great feature to accommodate anyone visiting, when mobility and/or weather are at issue. This width allows you to plan for (3) 9' min. wide doors. Make all garage doors 8' high min. (SUVs with Thule racks). With a garage this wide, likely, the long inside wall will offer you plenty of lineal ft. of storage, either in base + wall or in full height wall cabinets. Regardless of your station in life, if you are building a new home, it can be designed to eliminate the step transition btw. the garage and the house. This is an obstacle that is often created, when it can be easily eliminated with a little forethought, just as steps at the entry can as well. Comments (5)Most garages are too narrow. Typically something like 20' x 22' is standard, but with shelving and yard stuff hanging on either or both wall, I think more width is better. Especially trying to open the doors that would hit the wall or the other car. Just my 2 cents worth. I started parking in the driveway and left the garage for my other half. Works fine until it starts snowing this winter. :)...See MoreDo you park your car in the garage?
Comments (106)Yes- both the car and truck we drive everyday go in the garage. We have 5 vehicles in total so the other 2 trucks get parked outside and the hubby has his other car parked in his shop....but they all seem to rotate in and out of the shop or other parking areas as used. We also store a few cords of wood in the garage and have a small chest freezer too- lots of sports equipment and gardening supplies are stored in there as well....See MoreGarage size question.
Comments (5)If you are going to have a bathroom in the back of the garage, you probably want the garage to be deeper then 24'......25' would be better. A large garage door is much easier to manuever then a small single door, therefore, I recommend a large garage door. How big is your SUV? It looks like a suburban which is probably at least 19 feet long....You will want a little space in front of and behind it when it is parked in the garage. Do a drawing with the suburban drawn in, include the bathroom and the laundry area. Draw in the washer and dryer and the bathroom fixtures.......Don't forget the water heater. You might want to do a tankless water heater which can hang on the wall over the laundry....See MoreTiffany Settina_Bender
