My husband and I had this dilemna. We settled on hardware that was easy to clean. I actually wanted those "in-style" cup pulls, but my husband noted that the undersides could get really icky and gunky and difficult to clean when kids' food covered hands get a hold of them.

Otherwise, I think it is a personal choice.

Im all for personal choice but i would highly recommend professional consultation when considering any type of change to your home. The value of your home depends on it.

I had a variety of things I considered before purchasing the hardware for my kitchen renovation. I wanted the metal to tie to other items in the room, and since I had oil rubbed bronze light fixtures and an ORB faucet, I went with ORB. I did my kitchen in a very traditional style, so kept hardware to the same style. I have had issues in the past with cords catching on hardware and it drives me buggy! So I specifically required hardware that cords would slip over. This is especially true in my bathroom, since a snagged cord can make a hot flat iron slip through your hands!

No, there's no rule of thumb one needs to adhere to. With pulls these days often being an integral part of the design, one sees setups where they're used exclusively (both drawers and doors) except maybe on very narrow spice pull-outs, etc, which require a knob or a half-moon pull. Also, depending on the door style, they might well look better centered on the bottom of the door (horizontally) rather than toward the edges where two doors meet.

On the other hand, I've also seen kitchens that use knobs exclusively, and just that button effect works very well in the design. I would just avoid anything "whimsical," like pulls placed on the diagonal.
