That is a lovely built in banquette!

What style is your kitchen area or home? With that backsplash, I'd think blue gingham would be cute, but that would be for a country style. I'd stick to one of the shades of blue in the backsplash, with white and maybe another color you like......yellow or green maybe, in a print or stripe.

Are you asking about a table style or color? The best type of table for a nook/banquette is a trestle or pedestal, as sitter's legs get caught up in the legs of a standard table. Depending on your budget, I've seen them at Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, Wayfair.com. Depending on how many you normally serve meals to, they also come with insertable extensions. If you like color and cottage or beachy style, you could paint a second hand table in a shade of blue to pick that color up in that area of the room.

Maybe blue and red, touches of lime

Maybe you would like black and white toile fabric, white table and painted blue chairs.

a pretty, soft white on blue toile would be lovely, as would a plain canvas with blue or grey piping.

the benefit of canvas would be that it's very washable. it's pretty casual, though.

Maybe you can make a distressed table similar to this. Find a used table in a thrift store and finish it in your blue palette. Rectangle table. Use black and white large print fabric with black or white chairs.

I can see a gray table with painted chairs. Consider craigslist finds since you want to paint. Sw French Gray Light - ish. Save blue for the cushion / chair pads with skirts that wrap with velcro . . .

Another fabric option with touch of yellow. Add a bowl to the table top with lemons.

Thanks, LB--I really like the idea of a painted table or painted chairs, and I like the "gotcha" print. Was thinking of staying away from black/white, as our old kitchen was black/white/gray, so we're hoping for a bit more color here. I know I picked a neutral wall color... :-) My husband wanted blue walls, but I was trying to keep things more flexible. I appreciate all your suggestions!

More. For darker blue, you can add dark blue in accessories in the kitchen.

These fabrics are all beautiful--I think I like the top 2 best, as I like the geometric look. I think they would appeal to my husband as well! (He's not as keen on florals...) Thanks for your thoughts. Do you have suggestions on the size of the table? We were thinking rectangular, rather than round, but I'm having trouble finding something under 60" long. Even though the longer side of the nook is 67", we're figuring we need to leave some space on either end of the table for people to get into the bench. Thanks!

I think your best bet is round or square with an extension insert. In most cases the bench area extends beyond the table, and the area on the open end and open side for "L" shaped benches have chairs for additional seating.

Look for a square table around 48" with a leaf - just like mtwnmom suggested if you want a more modern look, or a 52" round pedestal if you want to play up the history of the place.

I wasn't originally sure that a round table would work, since the bench on one side is longer than the other, but I do like some of the suggested photos above with round tables... Also think square might be worth a try if we could find one with a leaf--I did see one last week at a vintage shop, but it was only 42" square with no leaf, so I was concerned it would be too small.

My first thought was a round table when I looked at the space. Round or oval provide easier access to the bench seating. I'd look at sunbrella type fabrics for the benches- I have sunbrella on my kitchen chairs- they take a beating and still look good. I think a nice stripe with khaki and blue would look nice, then a couple of pillows in the corner that have a small print on them. Here is a ballard designs fabric sample:

My feeling with a round table next to L-shape seating .. the two end people may not be as comfortable getting close enough to the table? I took a good look at the pics with round tables and seating would be ok if there is no one on the ends. I think it depends how many people at one time will be seated here. If once in a while, a round table will work. I think if there will be maximum seats used, a rectangle or square with a leaf (as mentioned) would be my vote if many people : ))

Maybe you can tape off the floor where a large round table will go to see if it can work,
