Exposed pipe in stairs

We recently bought a house and made some changes. We wanted to open up all the space, including the stairs and found a pipe that is now exposed. We are looking for a cool way to use the pipe, since we cannot remove it, but we do not want to put up the wall either. Cover it? Paint it? Laminate with stainless steel? What are your thougts and ideas?

I would box it in to try to match the other (probable) column kitty corner to it. I think it looks insubstantial against the larger scale of everything else. I guess that you could also enclose it with a larger round surround, too - that would look OK and then maybe paint it an accent color, repeating that color on another wall, or in an interesting way, on the underside of the stair.

Thank you Kathryn, I like the idea of making it larger and painting it with an accent color, but I will also think about S&Associates idea about covering it with a creeper, since what is under the stairs is meant to be a small interior garden, so that might work out. I will let you know whatever we decide to do!

I agree with these comments. This is a wonderful open & contemporary space with a good relationship of the outside & inside transitions. I would embrace the intention of the design and install an interior garden under and along the stairway. It's a lovely space really with a lot of immediate potential

I would leave the pipe just as it is. Tell your adorable son it's his job to stand next to it to make it look good.

An exposed support pipe is a sign of cheap construction. It should be boxed in the same size as the exterior ones. You see them all at the same time and will flow better.

I would box it in using colored acrylic.

HI -- I would box it in to make it part of the wall that it's on and then paint accordingly. Looks like an interesting beautiful house . Your children are adorable !

My take is it depends on what you're using the space for and how it's getting "furnished". If you prefer the monotone geometry, box it in to blend. If its less formal, paint it a brighter color that matches something else that is focal to the space.

I love the idea of the steel wrap, except it would seem out of place and almost like a fancy duct riser.
