Make sure the fixtures are rated for insulation. You can easily replace the baffles and trims. Look at manufacturers web site for trim kits. Led's are expensive upgrade.

They are more expensive, but like that I can leave them on all day for my puppies with no worries and no burn outs in over a year

You do not say what size or brand of can you have. This is important. They make an air-tight replacement trim for the most popular cans. If you get LED retrofit bulbs, make sure that they are rated for use in an insulation rated recessed can. Many are not and they need to be able to cool down or they will burn out. They also require a trim that is not air-tight due to their size. Those cooling fins on the bulb are not just for looks. The can manufacturer may make an LED retrofit/ air-tight trim all-in-one unit. (I know some do) This should be your cheapest and best way to go if you want to spend the extra money on LEDs.

I believe they are Halo 6" fixtures. Thanks for the advice. I am going to look into the LED IC retrofit fixtures. I found some online around $50 each.

Go with LED and replace the trims. If you use alzak trims you will get better light out put than white baffles. I concur with previous posters on the IC retrofits.

Mark, what part number are you looking at? The word "fixture" is not what you should be using. Many Halo retrofits are not rated for contact with insulation. (or other brands) There is one I am thinking of that works without getting an electrician. There may be others, but these should offset the electrician costs. It is an RL56

I am re-reading some of the other specs, but the labor costs could be the bigger part of them.

A big issue here is getting you air-tight AND IC (insulation contact) rated when you are done. I am not aware of a way to do that in that vaulted ceiling and also get an alzak or similar trim without tearing out sheetrock. But, I am looking.

With the lights on it is hard to tell what you have. It looks like a standard trim, not an eyeball or gimbal. If that is the case, it will work pretty much the same. The only thing is that you need to make sure to get a whiter light (3000K or more) to make up for the lack of lumens. They are only 600 lumens. A 60 watt bulb is 800 lumens and 75 watt are 1000 lumens, roughly. This seems to be the same with any brand of LEDs.
My favorite fix for this is actually the 30WAT trim with a 60watt PAR 30 flood.

I don't think they have made an exceptable LED to go in the standard air-tight trims yet. They may fit, but they enclose it too much to let the cooling fins work.

Cree makes a great retro fit, also Nora lighting Diamond series is pretty good. but you can go buy new trims for about 12-16 dollars each and then experiment with screw in LED bulbs until you find one you like.
