New Kitchen for Wife

We just bought this home, which was built in 1990 and before we moved in I took one week of vacation to completely refresh the kitchen on a budget. (Sort of...)

Using Houzz to do tons of research, I transformed the kitchen from 1990's drab to 2013 fab!

Here's what we changed:
-Demolished the old tile&grout and replaced the counters with Ceasar Stone in Raven color.
-Installed a Kohler Whitehaven Apron front Sink
-Installed a Kohler Bridge Faucet
-Installed an Insinkerator 3/4 hp evo garbage disposal
-Repainted all the cabinets using Benjamin Moore Simply White with an eggshell finish
-Installed new cabinet hinges
-Installed new cabinet hardware (Gilmore Bin Pulls from Restoration Hardware)
-Removed one cabinet and replaced with stainless steel open shelving from Ikea.
-Installed standard subway tile purchased from Home Depot (used 1/8 inch spacing, and white epoxy grout)
-Installed under cabinet dim-able LED lighting purchased from Home Depot.
-Repainted the walls in a neutral gray color (Dolphin Fin by Behr, in seni-gloss)

Really nice job. Did you get multiple bids for the countertops? Did you find any pricing variation locally or not? I'm wondering if you can ever get a bargain on that material?

I got 1 bid for $2500.00 installed and a 2 bids around $4000.00 installed. I later found out the material cost on the Ceasar Stone was $1800.00. Also, everybody uses the same source, so if one place is out of stock and it needs to be ordered ALL the places are out of stock.

Hi Kirk, Your Kitchen looks awesome, Only one thing I want to recommend.

I think the windows near tap is closed with a glass. It would be a good idea if you use some curtains over there to let fresh air in while cooking.

Thanks for the nice comments. That 1 week was some really long days. I spent 8-5 every day, then I would go home and help for 3 hours with our 10 month old twins, then I would go back to the house and put in another 1 to 2 hours at the end of the evening.

By the end of Day 2, I thought "there is no way this is ever going to be finished by Friday." However, I was able to make it all happen. Everything finally came together on Friday :-)

Kirk the kitchen looks beautiful. I love your counters and they have lasting appeal because of the color. You remind me of my husband. He too just jumps in and gets the job done and we wives get to sit back and marvel. Thanks for sharing this!

Lovely job!! So glad you it rid if that tile countertop. They really gross me out. I keep thinking of how dirty the grout must get.

That is such a positive transformation. I love the subway tile, the countertop, the painted cabinets, the hardware-- the whole thing. And you did it all in one week?! That's really amazing-- it's really beautiful.

Wow great job with the remodelling! White makes such a great transformation for most kitchens (and why i always recommend the color for dated kitchen updates)

I thought I already posted this, but it didn't seem to show up in the list of comment.

I did 2 coats of primer. I did two coats of topcoat. I probably didn't need to do two coats of everything, but I started off trying to spray primer using an hvlp gun and ran into problems spraying the top coat so I ended up finishing everything with a roller and a brush!

Your use of the old cabinets was ingenious. I had to really look to see if they were the same as the old oak ones. The open shelving adds interest along with the farm sink. You have created a workable kitchen that is in style and works well for you.

I think it is safe to say that Papa has earned a nap! If my guy pulled off something like this, I would send him to his favourite vacation spot for at least a week! Alone and on his own.

Sadly, I know this won't happen 'cause I'm the one who has to build the Ikea furniture while Mr. Angry Thumbs waits in the wings.

Great transformation! I've been looking for kitchens that have the same bulkheads as mine. We recently updated our kitchen and am still concerned about the bulkheads. I notice ur cabinets have crown molding and I think that looks great and might have to try that on ours! Did u add that to yours or was it there prior? Job well done!

Stphbern- the molding was there previously, but it's not hard to add. You just need a mitre saw and some patience!

Naters11 - Oak is OK, but the nice thing is the paint can be easily removed. A lot of the new cabinets today are not good wood. So I'm OK with keeping the original cabinets and painting them for now. We can always go back in the future.

Kirk, I have oak cabinets with brass hardware but the rest of my kitchen is white. Floor, counter and backsplash. I personally consider cabinets like furniture built into the house. Which technically they are. White cabinets just look cheap to me. Your wrong, paint is not easily removed. Lot easier said then done.

You must really like honey oak cabinets. But to each their own. You should post pictures of your kitchen and see what the community thinks.

Since 2013 when I did this update, everything has held up well with the twins now being 4 and even with the addition of a dog.

I replaced the fluorescent lighting with recessed LED's and we also changed the halogen lamp over the sink to a nice dual copper pendant lamp.

It freshened things up nicely. I'm not a huge fan of too much white, but it's not my home and given your timeline and new twins when you did this, then good on you! Nice touch with the hardware :)
