Coffee Table Proportions

Hi, I am ordering a custom square lucite/acrylic coffee table for my living room. I am having trouble with the dimensions. My sofa measures 86" from the outer edges of the arms and the seat area is 66". The height is 19". For the length/depth, which measurement should I be using to determine the size (the length from outer arms or the seat) and what proportion?

Attached are some pictures of the space... (I know the rug is too small and the pictures are too high!)

I think a good size would be 1/2 to 2/3 the length of your sofa. Typical heights range anywhere from 16" (pretty standard) to continental heights of 22 to 25". The width (based on the adjacent lounge chair) is probably going to be 24-30". I love the idea of lucite cocktail table.......hope you post a picture of it when you install.

A good size coffee table is generally 1/2 to 1/3 the size length of your sofa. A good height for a coffee table is one that is levelled with your knees when you are sitting. Dont forget to measure the distance between the sofa and the space where the coffee table will be so you know there is enough room to walk freely.

Do you think 36"-38" squared by 17" high would be too big and too low?

I think a rectangular shape is more suitable for your grouping.......17" wouldn't be too high.

There is a second chair next to the one you see in the photo, so I thought that if I got a square table, I could also pull up dining chairs/floor cushions/poufs around it when I entertain to accommodate more people. Now that I know 17" is ok, I am debating on the length/width. Based on the length of my sofa, what would be the proportionate length of the table?

A good size would be 42" to 48" square. Good idea to provide additional seating for guests. Some cocktails come with seating ottomans underneath.

I just wanted to suggest turning your rug and putting the edges under your couch and chair for a different look.

I agree that the table would be better rectangular in this space. 50" x 30" & 17" high. All your furniture seems very traditional, why are you considering a Lucite table it seems so modern? More comments - could you loose the cloth on the end table and take off the placemats (just put them out when needed)? A fabric ottoman with a sisal area carpet and black lamp shades would look great as well,

How about painting the coffee table in a medium toned taupe color and distressing a little so the dark shows through? But I do agree the coffee table is too small for the length of your couch. And stagger your pictures one up one down or bring the pictures down they seem to float too high above couch.. I agree take the cloth off end table. Just an opinion.

Maybe a black rod iron with glass top coffee table picking up some of the black.
