Looks like you are probably in a 60's - 70's ranch so I would stay more traditional in my door design (stay away from the stained glass look). I would also paint it. Use a color that will only be on the door. That way your door is the focal point for the front of the house, as it should be. If you have shutters paint them a different color. Our door is painted a dark blueish green, the shutters are a taupe and the trim is almond.

If your trim is white on the inside then I would paint the door white on the inside also.

Wood stained is nice, but can be more maintenance. Just depends...do you have an exterior paint accent color that you'd like to tie in? It looks like your house is classic white and brick...I think you can go either way.

I would have the door painted white on the inside since you said the space is dark.

The house is actually not a ranch it is two stories. The outside shows mainly a roof but upon entering g we have a curved foyer and a curved staircase and balcony. That's why I feel the door should look "important". Just not sure if it should be black or wood stained. And whether I should go solid or have some glass (3 squares?) at top of door. Dur to height and brick we can not do a transom. Any additional thoughts?

Black door is classic- for "importance", you could go with a green/black or blue/black was well.

i'm deciding on a front door for small colonical style home. I am interested in knowing what you decided to do with your door? I thought you might have put a follow up pic. Please post, I'm interested in seeing.

We haven't done it yet as I couldn't make up my mind. I'd like to do wood but don't think it's practical where we live with warping issues and expansion and contraction in the various seasons. Ill moat likely stick with black but am looking into moving column over so not in front of door and will probably get a nicer storm door. I wish I could upload my pic and try out various doors on the house to see what it looks like first.
