A nice long console / cabinet to replace the fireplace could hold the tv and reduce some of the furniture footprint. A simple carpet could also add more coziness to the room.

Can the sofa be moved to face the fireplace and tv? I think a different mirror and lowering the chandelier would perk this room up.

I'd remove the fireplace which would give you more wall space to use. Unless there's more to it than I think, removing it should not be difficult and getting a sheetrock guy to come in and patch it and texture it should not cost too awfully much. You'll need someone to add a new section of baseboard. If the floors are real wood and not engineered flooring the job would become more complicated and expensive. If you could swing new flooring and the removal and patchup job, all you would need to do then is paint. It would make for a more gorgeous room and up the resale value!

I think a choosing a different wall color(a good paint job does wonders!), reupholstering the couch and replacing/removing the fireplace would liven the room up.

For almost no cost decorating, I would put the end table/lamp on the left side of the sofa and replace the shade with a warm white one. Remove the faux flowers above the photos and hang the two photos vertically, centered on the left side of the fireplace and wall. Then, put the ceramic dog on the floor, under the photos. Remove the pictures on the FP and put the candelabra on the right side of the FP mantel. Relocate the matching sofa pillow and add a solid color accent pillow and a textural creamy white/fur toss pillow for the sofa instead. An area rug would cozy it up as well. Also, remove any doilies and show all the pretty wood furniture.

Ok so you are wanting to keep a traditional style but update, gotcha. First The fireplace is a must go. I'm sure it was lovely at first but I think it's time for a modern traditional twist. I'm guessing you would still like a fireplace. Ok, They have some around stores like big lots and what not that are incrediable beautiful and give you a choice of modern, traditonal or a mix of both. Along with that you could place your tv above it. giving you more room for storage. I'm not sure if the room is fully closed in and you are able to move the furniture around but let's assume you can. Move the couch across the soon to be new fireplace (again, assuming this happens) add a nice rug, newly furnished couch and one or two extra chairs (more seating), a nice coffee table and pictures, pillows to dress the place right up.

**side note: I assume you like layering curtains? Add an extra rod, it give you the peak-a-boo layered look you'd love.**

If you remove the FP, which I'm in agreement with, have the light fixture hanging above the mirror removed and the hole patched while the drywall repair is being made. Once the FP is gone, replace it with a low credenza (not a TV stand) for the TV to sit on. Float the sofa perpendicular to the window in front of the TV. All the wall items in both rooms are too high. Wherever they are hung, keep centers at 60" above the floor. If they are hung with a piece of furniture, leave 5" between furniture and bottom frame. If hung in pairs or groups, separate them only by the width of one of their frames (assuming they'll be framed alike.) Drapes should hang floor to ceiling on a double decorative rod.

I had no idea (thanks, Alicia) that you can buy fake fireplaces that actually plug in and heat the room. I saw one at Sam's Club for under $200. This isn't it, but look what a difference a new fireplace would make:
