All this room needs is some pattern and a bit of updating on the window treatments. I would start by painting the walls a light grey/neutral tone such as bm wind's breath. Use a simple black or silver rod to hang patterned curtains. I like the carved chairs and think they could work if you lean the patterns in the room slightly towards a tribal/exotic theme. Is there space for the tv beside the smaller window? Seems a shame to cover all that natural light with the tv unit. A larger rug would help ground the large scale furniture. I would choose a glass top or transluscent coffee table to keep all that beautiful light bouncing around.

Totally agree with Otium...start with removing the drapes. The need to be hung higher and a great patterned fabric in just a simple pleat. The tv needs to move away from the window and hopefully could be hung instead of on the storage unit. I also love Benjamin Moore Clay Beige for the walls (much prettier than it sounds). Remove the little drape table, throw some really fun pillows on the sofa, reupholster the chairs with more color, and add a rug with slightly more color and/or pattern to it.

Sorry...missed the where you stated you wanted purples and grays. Forget the Clay Beige paint color! Love the Ikat fabric Otium just posted.

The large window is your focal point. Paint walls light gray as said. Remove drapes from window on left and just have sheers at that window, no drapes. On large window have sheers and gray (same as walls) Duponi silk panels on each side of window. The lined with cotton silk gray panels will add a slight sheen and interesting texture, use rods with a "silver" high shine.The panels should look full, but not too full, you might need 2 panels on each side of the large window. Hang panels high toward ceiling and reach floor with a little puddling on floor. The ornate chairs are absolutely gorgeous and they are focal points, too. Interesting chairs are like a sculpture in the room, they add a lot to the room and make a room more wonderful. They actually *make* a room. Can't tell what upholstery on chairs is. Don't know if you have a coffee table. Someone said a glass coffee table, add 3 "silver" high shine candlesticks (fat & various heights) on the table. To liven up a gray, purple plum you need to add some glitz in the form of high shine "silver" curtain rods & objets d' art. Forget the wall to the right of the large window leave it plain, it's not a focal point and should not be given any special treatment.

The small round table could be used as a side table between the sofa & ornate chairs. I'd change the white skirt, though. How about a black velvet table cover (maybe with black fringe at bottom?). This will help balance the black TV. If you feel table should have a lighter color & a heavier fabric, choose a color or print that will harmonize with the walls, drapes, sofas, chairs in a heavy upholstery fabric with fringe at bottom. Keep the white cloth on the table, it will be a good liner and add fullness to the new table-cover.

continued The silver candlesticks are nice, too. Think of adding these mirrors in a similar grouping to whatever room is behind the sofa.
