Metal standing seam is considered by many people to be the best roofing system for a sloped roof, for durability and also if you are interested in re-using rainwater. Asphalt shingles have been in use for many years because they were relatively cheap and flexible. Lately, though, I have heard that they have become more expensive because of the cost of petroleum, so there is much less difference than there used to be. They are generally less durable than metal roofs, or most other types.

Are metal roofs louder?

They make insulation panel to put underneath in order to minimize noise, but, since I live in L.A. and it never rains here, I have no idea whether it makes any difference. ;) I can say that our roof is asphalt shingle and we hear every squirrel and pine cone.
