A round cocktail table could pair nicely with the straight contemporary lines of your sectional. Have you though about rearranging your furniture so that the chaise is against the interior wall? It will probably block the bottom shelf but it could open up your space a bit.

Yes, too close to the fireplace. Also, we bought the sofa with the chaise so that sometimes we can sit on it to watch tv so we would like it to stay facing the tv

I would love to see a kidney shaped table with some interesting wood inlay. Or a glass top with 2 tiers...again in the kidney shape.

how would the couch fit if it were facing the fireplace? Have you tried that...and then putting chair or chairs on the window side? Just a thought.

I will try your suggestions mpoulsom and groveraxle. The sofa part is longer than the chaise though, so it will block off the area from the kitchen even more. The chaise is about 6 feet and the sofa part is about 8 feet. Coates Design, that's exactly what I was thinking :)

We bought a u-shaped sectional recently. We faced ours towards the telly. As to the coffee table, I waited a few months until I was sure of the size. Even though I admire the latest fancy coffee tables, I actually bought this oak, oval coffee table and painted it white (from a thrift store) and I am very happy with it!

We placed our sofa right up against one wall and left open space to the slider and it seems to make the most of the space.

Instead of buying two chairs, would you have room for this? Buy another sectional and then use one coffee table. All you need is walk space between the two chaises.

I like the idea of trying the sofa facing the fireplace with two chairs at window.... or if you haven't found the chairs yet, I like iamjudy's idea of two matching sectionals... comfy for all!

I hadn't thought of two sectionals. That could work, too. Although in the picture there is quite a reach to the coffee table from both sofas. I like the look though. I have to get out and do some shopping for the coffee table. I want to look for a round one. I think I may see what I can find for chairs, just for more versatility, but will definitely consider the two sectionals.

Haven't read all comments, but I would use two, small, round, matching tables. Each would have small circle base at floor level, center pedestal going up to support a little bit larger circle (flat top).

I found with our sectional that a round coffee table works well. Having some open space is a good thing! What type of chairs are you buying? I hope they are smaller scale than the ones you have.

I agree with Bev . There is nothing wrong with some open space , especially to show off a pretty area rug. I think a coffee table should be functional and relate to the sofa of chairs it is supposed to serve by being close enough to them for drinks, feet, etc. I hate a coffee table sitting in the middle of nowhere.

i agree to move the sectional closer into the room and away from the window. round coffee table, not too big, and nested tables between the 2 chairs. very nice flooring and carpet!! and i like the rustic cabinet on the right too. the built ins are great too.

I think your shelving would look good with some trim to frame it out. Also some panel molding on each side and above your fireplace to add some interest to the wall. You could paint the trim same as your baseboards (white) or same color as your walls. Many possibilities with the trim work and it isn't that hard to do.

Place a 24" round coffee table next to sofa should be 18" from front. Otherwise why brother?. You could go round or square ottoman also, in a print. Pull chairs into and towards the sofa. You place furn for conversation. Or TV viewing.

How do you watch TV? Sectional should be turned to face TV. Place coffee table or ottoman as stated. Put 2 chairs across rm to window float in room. For viewing TV.

I would not put a coffee table in middle of room like Gallery shows. Looks awkward..

I want to get two chairs that are smaller than the ones pictured. Maybe wing backs? Definitely narrower than the two I have now. Something with a print or at least some colour. Will it be okay if the chairs are taller than the sofa? The sofa is already about a foot away from the window wall and the chaise is facing the tv.

Get a vintage treasure chest from flea market as coffee table. it serves as storage, decor and functional as well.

Actually, the chaise is not facing the tv. I was wrong because we sit on it facing the tv, leaning against the arm rest. That way when someone is in the kitchen we can sit on the chaise and still be part of that conversation. We maybe should have purchased a sectional without the chaise, but this is the one we found in the right size and didn't think about it not actually facing the tv. oops! It does suit our purpose though. Hopefully it doesn't look odd like that

Also we find that with the chaise being open at the end, someone can sit on it and face either direction, into the kitchen area or the living area

I love club chairs. Smaller, affordable, nice rounded shape, and comfortable. Try those. A nice print would be good with an accent color picked up by sofa pillows. I have a similarly styled sofa in chocolate brown with kilim rug pillows. A skinny, slim end table on the sofa end by the wall is really an easy fix and a slim simple console table on the back side of the sofa would work for the person in the chaise. Of course, if you really want a coffee table, the round shapes are nice. I have a wonderful medium brown rattan ottoman (sans cushion) that doubles as a coffee table. Everyone is my house likes to have their feet up when they are television watching.

Was trying to download these images yesterday. Hope it works. As I said I think your built ins would look even better with some trim to frame them out. Please don't add trim to your shelving, trim will make your space more traditional. Go with a round table. There is nothing wrong with your set up, don't try to fix what's not broken.

I haven't read all the comment/suggestions here, but some suggest a round one...me...I say hunt down a small square one to fit that space properly. Going by the pic, it seems you do not have a lot of space to work with in front of sectional. I would measure the open space and then decide how much space you want to dedicate to it then look for one or even build one yourselves. You could use a glass top easily cut to your size at any glass shop, and set in on either something you already have or design one from anything unusual you may have, or even just four legs (available at Lowes/Home Depot etc)one on each corner supporting the glass and attached using a heavy duty glue or clear caulking compound. Also, check out the backroom clearance sections at furniture stores, Target , Pier 1, TJMaxx etc....Easy.

Also, just read indomom comment. I agree,,, moving the sectional away from the window, and then using a console table behind it with a lamp and some decor, would make your beautiful windows more of a focal point as well. It seems the placements of your furniture is lopsided and off center from the fireplace...square the room and it will become more centered. I can't tell what the pc of furniture is on the far left side in this pic...Possibly using that in front of the window could work also. But I still say square table ;) ....

Have you considered two small tables? I'm thinking of two small, square tables that could sit side by side as a coffee table, or could be moved and placed in front of people, wherever they are seated along the sectional. I'm attaching an image of a table that would be about the right size: about 20x20x20. This would give you a consistent look with a lot of flexibility.

2 small tables in front of a couch, even when done by a pro looks like a temporary fix until you can find the right one. The room always looks unfinished to me. Keep searching until you find the right table, you'll know it when you see it. You have great style, trust yourself.

I'mwith people in getting side tables plus a round coffee table

Now that Christmas is over, we have purchased a round coffee table and small round table for between the two chairs. I love them! We will be getting two new chairs for the space when we find what we like. We're thinking wing backs or arm chairs. I think we need a new lamp, probably a floor lamp. I like the ones that stand in the corner but extend out over the furniture. I also need advise for the mantel. I don't want too much on it but think it looks really bare with nothing. I thought of some small vases in the blue colour but haven't found any yet. It is very shallow, only about 3"!! I found the little glass bird that I love. I may add a couple more of them. Ideas?

We have a very similar layout and considering a round coffee table too. Should the coffee table be centered with the fireplace and what is the rule of thumb for table size when it comes to round? I have enough space to have the table 15-18 inches from our sectional but not sure it would be centered with the fireplace doing that.

A round coffee table with mirrors or glass would be nice and give you a table without dominating the space.
