need paint advise on loft and vaulted ceilings

OK houzzers..., the painter is coming this week to paint my living room and loft. My friend who is an interior designercame over yesterday and suggested painting the ceiling the same color as the walls. I love the idea. so my question, do I paint the loft ceiling which is only 8 feet the same color as the vaulted ceiling, which is at least 25 feet.. OR do I paint the loft ceiling a different color..OR do I do an 80% white to 20% color for the loft ceiling?? What do you think? I would love to hear from some designer pros! The first 3 pics are looking up from the living room and the last pic is from the loft area!

Paint walls and ceiling the same color. If you live with it and don't like it then you can always paint the ceiling again a different color.

Tmk remodeling, ok I can paint the ceiling all one color, would you do the same as walls or a lighter 80-20 mix? Or just go one or two down on the color strip with vale mist? Curious to know..

Depends on the light in the larger room. If lot's of natural light, then go deeper than vale mist. If the upstairs loft gets less light, you could go two up from vale mist there. If you hadn't already done the DR I'd make it the darker, more intimate space just because it is an intimate gathering spot, but I'm sure the reverse will do. If you have paint left over from the darker tone, maybe you could paint the back dining room wall with it. Here's a house with the kind of "flow" of shades I'm talking about. Somewhat similar to your color.

I like leaving the ceilings white

I think all the suggestions are worth considering. Any decorator pros out there with an opinion. My decorator is suggesting white in loft and vale mist vaulted ceiling. I'm leaning a different way.

Definitely paint both ceilings the same colour or else the space will look chopped. Painting the ceiling and the wall in the loft about two tones darker than vale mist will make for a cozier feel. As for the dining room, leave the wainscoting as is and consider wallpaper. Paint the ceiling in the dining room vale mist.

Thank you Lydia for your feedback I think I will go a little darker on the ceiling. The walls in the loft connect to the bottom main floor living room. If i paint the walls darker in the loft they all have to be darker s they ll connect to the main floor livibg room..Are you suggesting just painting the one wall .not shown . it is it toward the back of the loft and is sorta separate from the other two walls that connect to the living room walls.
Also ceiling in dining room connects to kitchen so I don't think I can paint that vale mist. Has to stay white..to connect with adjacent kitchen.. Ugh, so many angles and ceilings in this place.. I'm happy to hear your thoughts and hank you for responding o quickly. He is coming Tuesday to paint and I need to get it right..

You're welcome! In the loft I meant the wall facing the couch. Does that also connect to other rooms?
    panamstew thanked Lydia (Kazza Design)
No that is a wall separate from the other 2 walls, so your suggesting painting that October sky which is one shade darker than vale mist.. And the ceiling October sky as well. Would you use flat or matte on the walls? Flat on the ceiling right? Thank you for your quick response. He comes tuesday to paint!

It's really hard to suggest paint online but I do suggest going darker for the ceiling and the wall in the loft area. This will create contrast and depth. Using the same colour everywhere will be overload. These are the two colours. I usually use matte on the walls and flat on the ceilings. Don't want to confuse you but you could keep the ceilings white to tie in with the wainscoting. It really depends on what mood you want the rooms to convey. Painting the ceiling will make the design more contemporary and white more traditional. Are you painting the DR vale mist also?

Dining room is painted vale mist already I did that myself. I'm trying to get out of traditional and more transitional..everything before was so traditional so I'm trying something new! Do you think the darker October sky will look good on the ceiling in flat and the accent wall matte october sky too?
Anyone with any other suggestions, decorators?
So far I think darker ceiling and accent wall

There's no problem in having the same colour in different finishes (matte and flat are very close). The reason why flat is used on the ceiling is so light (aka imperfections) doesn't reflect too much.

Ok I thinking decided on doing a two shade darker rain tree green Ben Moore on loft accent and ceiling and the lighter vale mist on all the other walls. The painter wants my choices tomorrow, any last minute thoughts. I'm scared I'm picking or oing something wrong... Thanks!
Accent wall on back wall in loft area would be rain tree green. 2 shades darker than vle mist which will go on all other walls.. Rintree green on ceiling too ....

I like Raintree Green but thought you might find it too dark! Did you ask your designer friend for her opinion? It helps when someone has actually seen the room.
Hi lydia, Hopefully she can come tomorrow to look. It is dark, I put some on the accent wall as ou suggested.. It would go on the ceiling too...maybe I should just go 1 shade darker... I'm driving myself crazy and I'm out of time.. The rain tree is dark, should I just do 1 shade darker for loft and ceiling? I know you need to see the room but what are your final thoughts? And thank you !
And it's not October sky, it is October mist. I was wrong on olor

I prefer October Sky! October Mist seems more green. Although I like Raintree Green I think it would be too dark for the overall look.

Lydia, should I stay on same color fan? I don't know why I thought it was October sky.. I have a green and cream color burber carpet so,I need to stay more green.... I think you just helped me make my final choice, 1 up from vale mist. Not 2 up which is rain tree...maybe I'll reprint the dining room the rain tree, I liked that suggests you gave a few posts back.... You are awesome for answering me every time, promise I will post pics for u to,see. Thank you again..

The reason I prefer October Sky is because there's more of a contrast with Vale Mist (or so it seems on my monitor). I find that October Mist isn't dark enough and Raintree Green is too dark (in relation to Vale Mist).

Ok back to the paint store tomorrow to get a sample of October sky.. I'll try it on the walls and see how it looks with vale mist..I'll let you know. Thanks!

Hi Panamstew! How did the painting go?
It came out beautiful, very soothing and calming.. I had my friend the decorator Tammy come over and we went with vale mist matte on walls and vale mist flat on ceiling ..it looks darker on defiling and I love it! I will post pic when the weather is sunnier, cloudy and rainy today.. The painter finished by 2 today and was gone by the time I got home.. I'll post pics soon! Thank you again for all your help!

lydia. deco..need your advise ikea tv and bookcases dark or white? anyone?
Do you have a pic of the ones you're considering? I think white as a counter balance to the FP, especially if you plan on dark for new tables. I think it should contrast with them a bit. You don't want to get bogged down in either one. Paint turned out great!

dsimmer, I had my friend who is a decora ,tor here in franklin lakes nj come to my house.. She suggested painting the ceiling as did many on houzz....I did matte on walls and flat on ceiling..same color..interesting thing is it looks alittle different depending on what time of day it is.. I love my new paint and would do it again with my vaulted ceilings!

decoenthusiaste, They are the IKEA hemnes bookcase and also the tv stand as well as the bookcase with glass on top and doors on bottom.. let me see if i can post a pic from the catalog..not to good at posting from something other than my camera! I would get the bookcase and storage unit from the first picture and the tv stand and bridge from the second pic..darker wood or white are my two choices..

Go same color all walls. Can go a shade or two darker on some walls but same tone though out.

Paint looks great......what a pretty colour! Do you plan on having the bookcase and TV stand on the same wall? The two don't look like the same colour? Although I like the greyish wood, there wouldn't be enough contrast with the paint colour. I would actually suggest going darker like chocolate brown but it really depends on all the other furniture also.
hi Lydia!!!! thank you for all your help, i love the paint! yes the bookcase, tv stand and glass case all on the long wall opposite the fireplace. bad pictues but thats the style I liked..either the dark wood hemnes offers from ikea or the white... I was thinking white for all three pieces...Darker furniture for couch and end tables and a colorful ottoman to use as a coffee table and also 2 chairs, no love seat... what do you think!!!
    The paint looks lovely!!!
