Please help my mom decorate her entertainment center

Please help! I'm visiting my mom in Murrells Inlet (approx. 15 miles south of Myrtle Beach), SC, for the Thanksgiving holiday and she wants advice on how to decorate her wood entertainment center (86"L x 55"W x 25"D). Attached are a few pictures of the entertainment center and the living room in which is located to give an idea of her style. The cable box and DVD player must stay--anything else can go. Over the summer, I started to decorated it but it did not quite turn out right.

My mom loves shopping at the following stores for home goods: Pottery Barn, Tuesday Morning, Home Goods, Marshalls, Ross, department stores, etc. Please send your suggestions along with the stores from where she can puchase them. Thanks so much!

I agree with Pyramid, but just for accessorizing, I would suggest this...lighted & hardwired sconces on either side of the artwork over the mantle (you'll need a licensed electrician). For the TV cabinet, the plate on the top needs to either stand up straighter or be replaced with the plate that's on the first shelf. Then there needs to be a third item...perhaps just a big piece of driftwood. On that first, top shelf, again not much is needed. I would center the plate & add a large conch shell on top of the books. I'm not a fan of jabots on windows or white blinds. If possible I would replace with natural woven blinds with simple sheers over them, with the rods hung high & wide on iron rods.

Thank you both! My apologies for not stating earlier that the green chair will be removed as it is an electric lift chair that was needed to help my ailing dad. My mom is not will to part from the other chairs. She has several family and friends visit her throughout the year and needs the other seating. Plus, she recently reupholstered the rocking chair that was given to her from my 96 year old grandmother.

Oasis, My mom will definitely take your advice and look for the suggested items when I return for Christmas vacation in 3 weeks. Your recommendations would be a welcome addition to the entertainment center!...Currently, there is a recessed spotlight over the framed artwork. Is it still OK to add the wall sconces on either side? Please let me know as I really like this idea. Also, should my mom add anything to the mantle?

    Again, many thanks!!!

I'd suggest just putting the plate that is on the top of the shelf inside centered and remove the greenery from the top (it's okay to be empty). Then, a nice shell or small round object on the stack of books on the right. So, the burgundy plate inside will be placed on one of the other bookcases.

Thank you qwanda!!! Yes you can still do sconces even though there is a spotlight above. The lighted sconces give a different ambient feel than potlights. I find spotlights to be too harsh generally.

I did just notice that the picture over the mantle is in a niche with an arched top. I woulD like to see that niche painted 2 shades deeper than the wall color for some interest (lOVE THAT PICTURE) No more will be needed on the mantle,

I would move all those books to the left and organize them tallest to the left shortest to the right. You have height to work with so I would either buy a nice tall vase, or place one of your plates in the middle but propped up. Then I would move the DVD player with cable box to the right. I would also allow space between each section of books, vase and cable box so they aren't cluttered together.
