Is the open concept kitchen/dining room a thing of the past?

I don't like to sit at my beautifully set table and look into the messy kitchen! And if I took the time to clean up, the food would be cold.

That is one of the flaws with the open concept deigns. Everyone can see your kitchen. It is hard to prep, cook and serve without making a mess, or putting things in the sink. I lay a big cutting board across the sink to cover it all until my guests leave. it helps. I toured some old homes decorated for the holidays yesterday and each room was so nice and cozy with 4 walls and its own personality. It was nice to see those types of homes again.

Matter of preference...homes with formal dining rooms were made for you.

No, I don't believe the open concept is a thing of the past. I'm a very neat cook and tend to clean up as I go. Maybe you could reposition your seat at the table so you cannot see it!

I should clarify that, we do clean as we go, and try to be as neat as possible, but as I was sitting at our beautifully set Thanksgiving table, I could see the pots & pans in the sink, etc. The designer photos show immaculately clean dining rooms and kitchens but there is a certain amount of reality.

I agree, sometimes it is nice to have a bit of a visual boundary, but we live in a cute 1940's cottage which has become a little too cute for me with too many visual boundaries. We will be building a new "age-friendly" house and I do like an open feel, but so many open concept kitchens make me think... Ding, order's up! Isn't there a happy medium? Lucy Ricardo?

My1970s ranch style house is half and half, My kitchen opens out into my Family room for a great room feel but there is a wall with an opening between the kitchen and dining room. Works fine, only i person sees the kitchen from the dining room,

I think it depends on your lifestyle. My house is not open plan but olive cooking so spend quite a fair bit if time in the kitchen but miss out on conversation with family and guests. When I get to build a new house I'm going for open plan

Pretty good. I thank you and am glad to know everyone in the world doesn't want a completely open concept or maybe even large stainless appliances.
