Christmas tablescape opinions please!

could use some opinions on my holiday tablescape. we dine at the table infrequently, and the table is near the Christmas tree, so I was hoping for a bit of a "wow" with the tablescape.

is it working, or should I try again? do I need a runner (that was the advice my friend offered up, but I'm not much of a table runner fan)? I have a number of mirrored elements in the room -- would a long narrow mirror as a "table runner" look festive and sparkly, or just tacky? (sorry for the poor quality iPhone photos -- my good camera met with an unfortunate accident over the holiday).

thanks to all that take the time to respond!

    Antiqued mirror would look nice.

I like the idea of the mirror/runner. My gut says to use only one of the ginger jars in the center. They're very powerful visually and draw the eye, which makes some of the other elements lose their pizzazz.

Brenda, thank goodness for someone else who isn't big on table runners! I love the green ginger jars. I would like to see another set of crystal candle sticks to make an arrangement of three on either side instead of the tall green glass vases and small red votives which look just a tad bit random to me. More crystal and mirrors could be very beautiful and give you that holiday sparkle.

I think the mirror idea is nice, but if you wanted to add some more color you could simply cut out cardboard squares and wrap the squares in red foil paper and place them like diamond shape down the center of the table or one long red foil wrapped rectangle. The foil paper would add a nice reflective sheen and would be very inexpensive to do.

I would remove the end pieces. Add a long mirror under it all. Ikea sells.

+1 on the mirror/runner. It would bounce gleam and light around the room, reflect the lights on the tree, and give you that wow you are looking for. I think the reason you need it is that it will make your current placement more cohesive, as well as the bonus of the additional shine.

mirror seems to be unanimous! I took the beveled mirror off of a closet door to try it out (without editing my items for now) ... comments?

If that's the case then set up a mini village on top of the mirror spray some snow on it to mimic a lake and get a couple figurines skating on the pond .

This is what i have made for mine .

Perhaps a touch of live greenery would help. The Ginger Jars, while attractive, seem rather large and overwhelm the other pieces. Perhaps if you used one in the center, then work your way out to the ends with groupings of the other items the same on both sides of center. Link it all together with a strand of greenery and maybe some soft decorative bows.

A table runner with some golden threading would give the table some texture and provide a great base for the decorations. The jars seem a bit distracting, consider removing and placing on an end table or in another area of your home. The mirror is also a great idea. Enjoy your home this holiday season!

From the point of color, I suggest u use red as main color, put some red vessel or candles, and add little bit green decoration or yellow, or mirror in order to all colors are under same tune

I agree with others' input regarding the jars. Put one in the center and use the other somewhere else in the room.

If you do have a meal at this table, the Ginger Jars block the view across the table making conversation difficult because of their bulk. Try one jar in the middle, then out from there, place 2 of your tall items, then out from them, the 2 fat red candles. Tie it all together with some greenery, and maybe some bulbs, and pine cones and berries. (Use whatever's in that bowl in the middle right now).

Good ideas everyone about editing down to 1 ginger jar and working out from there. I agree that the two large pieces on the end sort of dwarf the other items. Some fresh greenery would look great as well as mentioned by several. Best of luck for your Holiday entertaining!

A table runner or mirror would unify all of it, but if you aren't a table runner fan, how about surrounding it all with some live greenery or garland?

What about a large tray or bowl filled with real pine, holly leaves, add beautiful ball
ornaments.. Make it look very lush. Easily removed if you use the table. Ginger jars are pretty, but would find another area for them

Beautiful room purchase a runner to go down the middle to give it some contrast. It will also make your decorations pop but it will have to be light in color. Instead of placing the green ceramic vases on the end, somewhat place them inside and then put the short votive candles on the outside giving it height drama.

How funny our similarities and differences in response! Brenda, thanks for a glimpse of your lovely home and holiday spirit. I love your bold, bright ginger jars, and the fact that they echo the design in your rug. To me, they as a pair are the stars, probably year round, and the rest are your back-up singers.

Whether it's a runner or a mirror-my vote, or greens (be careful with candles though) I'd use one element to unify, and maybe simplify the grouping to the jars and the bowl in the center with a candle in the middle of the stuff in the bowl -- assuming it's not flammable. Your other pieces could take your colors elsewhere around the room -- they're nice, but scattering the strong statement of those gorgeous jars.

    i love those ginger jars.
and i like the mirror, though i think it needs to be longer. (maybe fake it with a piece of sparkly tulle fabric under it?)

i do think just using 1 ginger jar as the center could be lovely.
like this maybe (hopefully it shows up).
and you could use the stuff in the bowl as scatter along the mirror.

I liked it more in the original picture. Simple but colorful and effective.

If you want to stay true to your more modern look, buy one of the "over the door" wardrobe mirrors, they're pretty cheap, paint the frame black to match your table and have just the one ginger jar, a couple of the red candles and then add a HUGE white orchid or white amarylis plant. The tropical plant with the ginger jar will "make sense" as a tablescape and will go with your zen feel of your room and still be festive. Then you can add the tea lights randomly down the remaining of the mirror for when you have a party. I persoanlly would find that to be very elegant and festive.

The others' ideas are great! If you want to be more christmassy, take the suggestion of live greens and make that your runner but be sure to place a green felt fabric so you don;t ruin your table. Keep both the ginger jars but place asymetrically and one on a riser so it looks taller, hide the prop in the greens. Do the same with the glass candle holders. Then add a simple red ribbon to the neck of the ginger jars to coordinate with the red candles.

I love the photo qoais posted and have done similar tablescapes often...fresh greenery, votives, pillars, and scattered ornaments. You can find those lanterns everywhere now...all different styles and colors. I just bought some of Pottery Barn's "Malta" lanterns. I also like the idea of a mirror...especially during the holidays for extra sparkle.

Another idea is a long, narrow box down the center of the table. Fill it with greenery and candles. It's a little more casual but really nice...something similar to this...a Thanksgiving "runner" but will give the idea.

I think the problem with your original idea Brenda, is that there is nothing to make it cohesive. You have some basic elements, but you need something to link them to each other. As was mentioned, greenery is probably the best tool for that. I saw the "candles in mason jars" idea on Houzz and although I can't find my little antique crates right at the moment, I used a tray and made a small scape. My table is really small so had to keep in size. I love it. I also made a crystal bowl with just some green glass cones and a mint green poinsettia that I just love. The simple things are the most pleasing!!

You can also use vase fillers like the faux cranberries in the link below. I ordered them a few months ago, and they're much nicer than shown in the photo. They look great in a hurricane with white candles.
