Home Depot and Lowes sell a variety of shelves you could use, no more than three or four inches wide. If you have a leaf in the table I would suggest removing it unless you need it every day. Also, if I may suggest patterned curtains in white and beige. Did the light come with the dining room? It looks like a "builders special". I think I would try to find something a little more modern or traditional and in a gold tone. Start looking for an accent color and some art work.

Random question- might of thought about this a little late, but the paint was originally from the previous owner and we might repaint the house. I love gray but there are soapy colors and tones to choose from---any suggestions? I'm looking more into taupe gray

On second thought I think you should try to bring in other colors in the crapes. Are you going for a formal look or something more casual. I would look for something bright and light. Like bright yellow or a mint green.Anything to brighten the browns and add contrast..

I prefer a more formal look although mint green is favorite of mine and I so actually have a mint green theme by my pool/patio

Mint green would be lovely!! The chairs look like it's got a pinkish tint...or is it the pic? Either ways, mint green would compliment the chairs and the rich wood table. You can paint the upper wall mint green and paint the lower wall in taupe grey, while keeping the trim white. Accessories that go with this colour scheme are mirrors, silver and glass. This will also keep the formal look. You could leave the wall with just the mirror and add some coloured glass accessories and white corals (instead of candles) on your table. Putting anything more on the wall might give a cramped look. Keeping it minimal would make the space look bigger. You can add crystal or bead strings on either side of the mirror for that special touch. Adding a good runner can soften the dense look of the wooden table (Optional). Hope this helps. I would definitely choose the color scheme you'd like to go with before making any further suggestions on how to finish up your room. A lot can change with different colors.

Find some other dining rooms you like and post them in ideabooks. Then decide which colors or accessories you want to pull from those to inspire your own dining room.
