Do you have a Lowe's nearby - they usually have lots of such books.

Start with the local library and then some used book stores. All the books won't give you the best learning that comes from experience. Home Depot and Lowe's have hands on workshops and habitat for humanity always needs volunteers.
My husband is an architect who worked in construction through college but our years of DIY has taught him that some things are best left to the pros. With a little research and practice most of us can handle the cosmetic stuff.

I don't have a Lowes nearby, I do have a Home Depot though. I'll see if they have some workshops soon. Surprisingly Youtube has also been a tremendous help!

Besides finding a book, watch shows like Holmes Makes It Right and other renovation shows on TV. Check out Renovation Realities on DIY on Saturdays that follows average people doing their own renovation. It shows that it isn't as easy as it looks.

I'm assuming you haven't done a lot of home repairs if you're looking for books on the subject. If that's the case, I would strongly advise you to do a few upgrades to your own home to get a feel for just how long and complicated home remodels can be. We're in the middle of renovating our kitchen after remodeling it with the help of a contractor friend years ago, and it's a long, slow, expensive process.
