MY LIVING ROOM IS ALL OFF! PLEASE HELP!!!

Ok... we just moved into a new house and bought a new couch. My husband loves the couch and the coffee table. Problem is, everything seems to look good from every angle EXCEPT when you see the coffee table. Due to the size of the sectional, the coffee table is wayyyy right of the TV, entertainment center and overhead light.
How can I remedy this? I was thinking that I could maybe push the sofa closer to the TV and away from the window, and add a side table with a lamp to the window side. Think this will balance it out or just throw everything else off? Any help is appreciated.
And pleas excuse the mess... this move had been pretty chaotic.

I think 2 or 3 small tables kind of like this would work well with the sectional. Maybe two functioning as a coffee table and/or one as an end table. I'd hate to see you clutter the nice room with additional furniture trying to make the large coffee table work.
Buy or make an additional otteman that matches to extend the furniture to the end of the coffee table. It will create more seating and can be moved and used elsewhere when needed. Heck, it could be your coffee table down the road. You can use it in place next to other piece as seating and end table when needed by placing a large beautiful tray at the end for a place for drinks, snacks, etc.

How about something like this?? Take away the huge coffee table and add these toward the right of the sofa near the window like shown in the photos?

I think it's the sectional that's the issue here, not the coffee table. The long part of the sectional needs to be against that wall. And judging by the price of the coffee table and your husband's love for it, I think it would be cheaper (and better for your marriage) if you change the sectional. Good luck!! :)
too large, but yes, I would move the couch away from the window wall and add a small table and lamp like you asked. :) Other than "accidentally" breaking it, maybe you could convince your hub to sell it and buy one that fits the space better. beautiful room though! Love it!
Yes, the sectional is brand new and was pushing $4k, so that's not a solution either. And unfortunately, because of the lack of room due to the sliding glass door, we couldn't really put the chaise on that side. And hubby is a very large man, so small sofas just don't fit his big body.
    I can't win. :-/

Nice table. Here's a few optons. Try it on an angle. You can always list it on craigslist list it for a good amount. I have purchased expensive things and changed my mind after two years and sell them. I don't get what I paided but better than nothing. I just saw a one of a kind piece on craigslist I was eyeing it tyring to get hubby to buy it. It was originally 8000. and the guy was asking 3000. he did get it. If you ask 1000. you may get it. It may need to sit on there for a few months. You will get someone willing knowing they would pay 2000. or 1000. or even 1500. if it's from a designer type store list it that way it will sell faster. example dwellings, or even west elm pottery barn etc. I check daily for crate and barrel on craigslist. So do alot of my friends. I like it it's sadly is to big. I never thought of accidently breaking it. thats really good though. I am a very lucky girl my husband is really good about my purchases that don't work or I get tired of. I was able to sell a 1500. chandelier for 500. it took about two months. We had it for four years and I was done with it. So was my hubby. He pretty much lts me do whatever. I couldn't do it all the time but I have had about four bad decision purchases. I sold them all on craigslist. Now I go slow and measure. It's more upsetting to me than him. My husband is sooo easy going at least with me he is. Only a few people have gotton under his skin.

I'm with 5blues. It's the sectional or the coffee table--they really don't work together. I'm in the process of selling some mid-century stuff we got from IL's, on craigslist, myself, along with miscellaneous other things. If you are willing to wait, you WILL get your price.

How about putting an ottoman in the "empty" space (lined up with the left side of the coffee table)? It will give extra seating and give the illusion that the coffee table is "centered" with the furniture. Here is a modern ottoman that comes in a variety of fabric selections.

I had same problem, simply buy one more peace of the sectional, if you have space. I can't' tell from the picture.
Lots of interesting angles in the space. Could you do the sectional on the same angle as the (bar?) and the wall past the tv? It might open up the floor a bit and improve your view of the (pool?). Not sure if your space allows this.

Do you have kids? If you don't yet and plan on some. Tell him the square edges are not a good choice you need round so they don't hit their head on the point. Borrowing a niece or nephew will work tell him they hit their head. I remind my husband of that every time he see a new square coffe table he likes. I always hit my legs and brusie them on the square ones. You can add a piece like someone suggested but they may be pricey. You can try the extra peice or the table which do you want it to be over a good dinner. I feel bad for my friend she needs to do this with her husband. I am just really blessed my husband and I grew up with the same background and we are into buying and decorating together. We are repainting and he just told me yesterday the dining room pictures now don't match find new ones :)

Coffee looks to big. With L shape sofa go round. Could still stay in mirrors 24" is about right.

$2000. For a coffee table??? Wow maybe they will let you trade for a smaller one?

    Darzy ,genius idea !
Darzy, that is a great idea! It's visually low enough not to make the room look cluttered and will give the illusion that the table was purchased to fit with it.
Darzy great idea I said the same thing about 10 comments before you. Great minds think alike:-/

ok then everyone who suggested ottoman before Darzy is genius, and Darzy is just a copycat. ;). :-p
  • 12 years ago
I love the idea, Darzy. And I think it would definitely work. Problem is, we don't have the space over there due to the sliding glass door. Unfortunately, I'm realizing that the room is just narrow; long, but narrow. For now, I may just have to get the ottoman to use as a coffee table until we have more space, or get a smaller coffee table.
Thank you all for your suggestions. Have a wonderful evening! :-)

rdy2pnce...we mean the ottoman sort of at the end of the chaise (with the left side of the ottoman lined up with the left side of the coffee table). Not, the ottoman on the other side near the slider. Chaise, space, ottoman.

I see this has no easy answer. It's just big. So live with it being too big, or get another one. Ugh, that's hard. For what it's worth, it may be a sore thumb to you, but I still think it looks like it fits the area. A little squished maybe but still flows with the style.

I was looking at your lovely room, and these pieces of art came to mind.

I don't know if you are keep your walls blank to have a minimalist style, but I thought I would offer them in case you are looking for art.

    They are in this gallery.

Sort of like this, but a fabric color that complements.
Could you pull the sectional farther away from the wall (near the patio doors) and get a square table that sort of matches your coffee table (it is beautiful, by the way). This table should be sort of large, but will give your sectional a more longer look. Get a fattish lamp to put on this table and I think you will see a difference in your room. By the way, shouldn't your TV be just a little lower for comfortable viewing?
Have you tried the angle idea, or to back the couch up in front of the sliding door and then place a chair to fill in the space where darzy suggested? have you tried having the couch face the sliding door. That may make it easier to add a chair to the room. There should be a way to make it work with a low back chair. I have a 3' x 5' glass top for a coffee table which is currently stowed in a long closet. It kills me not to be able to use it, but it is just too big for the room.
I just re-read your original question. The coffee table does not have to be "centered" to the TV. You have centered the TV to the "room" and that is fine. Just enjoy that fabulous table.
I like it. It makes an asymmetrical arrangement, but it's balanced and usable. Darzy's ottoman idea (or whoever had it first) is a good one, but you don't have to do anything. Unless you have a thing for symmetry, I say let it be.
Actually, if you added a bit more visual weight to the left side of the TV wall, it would balance a bit better.
Beautiful furniture. Another sectional or benches facing the opposite direction to balance it out?
Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm 6 months pregnant and have been feeling way too stressed by this stinkin' living room. I have thrown in the towel and called in the services of a professional designer... the place I bought the sofa from sent someone over to get the place squared away.
Again, thank you all for your wonderful suggestions.
Get plenty of greasy fingerprints all over it and spray vigorously with chemical smelling cleaner when hubby is sitting there. Do this frequently while saying how much you LOVEIT, BUT you sure wish you could show it off better somewhere where it wouldn't get so much wear and tear, and a beautiful vase would look fabulous on it somewhere else.

I think the slate wall is a bit much. How about putting the section on it and hanging the TV on the wall where the sectional is now? That would open the whole room up to everything instead of sectioning it off. TV could be on a rotating arm and then could be seen from kitchen etc. Place a large mirror above sectional which would further downplay the slate wall. (Don't get me wrong, I love slate).
What would you like to say? It's a nice space. It feels a little enclosed, do you have two seating areas as in the picture you seem to? I would only have one as a large sofa like you have makes the room feel smaller. The colour is a little bland! Even if you want elements of that colour may I suggest that you separate the space behind with maybe a feature wallpaper or different colour and add some accent of these colours to your sofa and coffee table with some interesting books with colour maybe some flowers to marry it all together. I don't think you need to change the sofa or the table and I love that you have so many beautiful windows :)

The place you bought the sofa from probably has a matching ottoman available the same width as the side chaiselike sofa piece. So placing another piece like a matching ottoman right up to the piece that is there will make that shorter chaiselike furniture piece longer. Then that will match the length of the coffee table so the coffee table's end is not sticking out unanchored. You are lucky that chaiselike side is not something with an arm so this solution will be almost seamless once put in place. The chaise piece looks a little stubby now in the room with the length of the coffee table.

And someday when you sell that sharp-edged coffee table (or store it away until baby is grown to 6 or 7 yrs, old) you can use the "kid friendly" soft-edged ottoman as your "coffee table" with that beautiful tray I mentioned in my first comment here much earlier.

I added a picture which is not quite right, but see how there is an ottoman added at the end (or looks like added ottoman) that is what you need at the end of your chaisesofa.

    I love the slate wall....=)

Well, I'm glad it will be taken care of.
You have a solution right in front of you (so to speak) for the coffee table, if you want to use it. And really, it IS a concern.

You are pregnant. The coffee table has sharp corners and hard surfaces. Cruisers and toddlers are drawn to furniture that WILL injure them, like bees to flowers. So, you talk to your husband, before the baby's born, and tell him that you understand how much he loves the coffee table. And that you realize that it was expensive. But that you know that he would feel terrible if the baby got hurt, because he insisted on keeping it in the main room of the house. So, Honey, would you prefer that we put it somewhere else, and then keep Baby out of that room for the next 8 years, or that we sell it on Craigslist, and make the best of it?
I actually don't see the design of the area as a huge problem, but the baby thing is. Not a very practical table when baby starts to toddle. Your good for about a little under a year, then that table is toast. Sorry. I really like it. I'm an empty nester, so you can send it to me if you want to!

My sister-in-law tripped and fell into a glass-topped coffee table they had when they were first married. Needless to say, a trip to the emergency room and I don't know how many stitches later, they never had a glass-topped coffee again!
glass table are not joke and yes baby are drawn to troubles and lots of it , i had my daughter fell through a glass coffee table she was barely 18 months old and never been so scare of my entire life thanks god she came out without a cut !!!!!! i never owned another and she is 13 now and i added 2 more kids , lets say the table hit the curb grand V and i didn't care less of the price i paid for then
  • 12 years ago
I love glass coffee tables. We had a very nice one, but when I picked up my child I lost balance and fell right through it. The table was quite long, so I literally fell through with my back and head. I expected it to break down into little balls, like security glass, but it broke down in sharp pieces. The toddler was safe on my belly. I threw him on the sofa and got up. I couldn't believe I didn't have a scratch. Sharp knifelike pieces stood upright in the wooden floor, next to where my neck was. So never a glass table for me again.
Is the coffee table mirrored on top as well? I am really not a fan of that table. Why would your husband purchase it without getting your input?
    last modified: 12 years ago
So here is the ottoman idea being used as a "coffee table" and then later on you can switch back to the other coffee table and then place the ottoman at the end of the chaise to balance the look of the room.

P.S. And because the "ottoman coffee table" will not be as long as the original coffee table, the room will be balanced with the chaise. You will have two looks and both will be balanced. And then the bonus ottoman can be used in the third look.... to use as seating under that sofa table you will add in back of the regular sofa to square that room so it does not look "long and narrow" So three looks for the price of an ottoman! :-)))

The ottoman option really does seem like the most logical choice.

There's an elephant in the room and its not the coffee table. It's the coffee walls! And maybe that big shaggy rug isn't helping. Warm white walls and a cleaner look will give you much more a sense of space....then worry about which way round for the coffee table ( which I personally like the look of : )

I read below that the table is square, yet it looks like a rectangle in both pictures. Is the sofa a sectional, and could you add one more seat section? I can't tell from your picture if there is room and likely the chaise section clips on? This would give you some space to orient the table and use it. Otherwise, with this configuration it doesn't fit, so something has to change. Sometimes you make the right decision and sometimes you have to make the decision right. This is one of those times.

Can see why your husband doesn't want to part w/ the coffee table...as it's pretty sharp looking...no pun intended:) So..if that's not an option at this time, think you received some good suggestions from some of the above posters that will work nicely to help balance the room and coffee table...for time being...and possibly on a permanent basis. Here are my favourites:

Goveraxle mentioned: adding something like a large plant in maybe a fun pot on left side of tv to help visually balance the large offset coffee table. Think this will work nicely...but would also suggest you do away with those 2 narrow columns on either side of tv that look like DVD holders? ...as they are emphasizing whole offset coffee table issue.

Couple others also suggested the matching ottoman as extension of the chaise to help balance the room. This will also work nicely and need be...ottoman can also be used as 'the coffee' table once baby starts to strut around....and can be used with above groveraxles large plant suggestion.

Alternative to ottoman suggestion that could work to balance room was another posters idea of a smaller fun swivel chair off left to tv on chaise side that could also help balance the room.

Re. Ceiling light. Need to decide if it will be centred on tv or coffee table. From pics supplied, suggest maybe the tv. If ceiling fixture does need to be moved a bit...relatively easy solution is to get a decorative drywall/ceiling hook ...from lowes/home depot/local hardware store...extend the fixtures electrical cord a bit and loop the cord ...swag style over the hook which will be centred wherever you choose. Might also want to look at getting a bit larger ceiling light...and put a dimmer switch on it...and could lower it a bit. Other option might be one of those larger arc type floor lamps that can extend out from side wall over the area you want to light. Same again...get a 3 way light that allows you to adjust light level.

Realize you just moved in and it's likely all still early work in stages..but might suggest a large fun painting or some sort of artwork on the open wall behind sectional...to help balance the room ...give more visual interest and otherwise draw the eye from offset coffee table yada yada.

Love the rug and furniture you selected and I think w/ just a bit of tweaking and living in the space for awhile...above ideas can work so both you and yer husband are happy.

PS. I had a similar large coffee table balancing dilemma...and here are a couple pics of our place that i think helped to balance things out. Also couple pics of the arc floor lamp idea. Last lamp pic is from a Canadian stored called Structube.

    Good luck:)

In my experience that coffee table will go as soon as the baby starts walking so I wouldn't plan the room around it. You'll be so excited with your little one that you won't care.

2013 post; hope you got your problem solved. If not:

You could put the table at the side of the smaller part of the sectional and use it as an end table.

In the alternative, how much weight would that table hold?

You could invest in a really large and especially beautiful flower container you'd want in your living room and take it to a florist and have something truly wonderful planted in it. Then, (perhaps when you know your husband will not be home), have the florist deliver it to your home at which time you will move the table to place it in front of one side of the patio doors (the side that doesn't slide open? or isn't used) and have the delivery person set the potted plant on the table.

You could even have the florist include a card indicating the potted plant is to the both of you and congratulating you on..... whatever with no name as to whom it is from.

Invest in a smaller square ottoman to put in its place so the table will not be "needed" back where it's in the way.
