No. Yellow with brown is very 1970s. Here it is also the Hawthorn football team.

Here is one idea with a blue-gray tone that compliments with the browns in the room.

Yellow is a happy color and looks great with light cabinets. Check out this photo.

Your house has to flow. The adjacent room has a neutral, earthy tone. That is what you need to stay with. So, what you have in the adjacent room or something like the sea haze that dytechture posted would be appropriate.

The back wall...too much blank space. Maybe another set of kitchen cabinets

Large piece of art on back wall if more cabinets are not needed/not in budget. What is the switch in the center of the wall? Why was is placed there?

Would also suggest crown molding for top of cabinets. Dusting nightmare.

Thanks for all the comments so far. There is still another cabinet , splash back and extractor to come on the back wall. I'm doing it all myself and the painted cabinets is a much bigger task than I anticipated.

The switch on the back wall is for the extractor, but will have to move.

The floors will look better with a gray like Dytecture suggested. Maybe the reason the yellow seems off to you is that it doesn't go real well with the floor.

Thanks Dar, I also prefer the grey as recommended by others. My wife chose the yellow as an accent wall before I started on the kitchen and now that we are getting towards the end, we are having second thoughts on the colour. I'm partially colour bind, so I tend to go with what others say when it comes to choosing colours. I'm based in Johannesburg, South Africa, and I'm sure I can get an equivalent colour locally from one of the paint companies.

Regarding the kick boards under the cabinets, do I paint these white or add a little contrast?

Love the space you have! I think you should paint over the yellow with the taupe colour from the adjacent room. It will be great with the floor and counters. Consider putting crown moulding to cover the gap between you cupboards and ceiling (use same crown as the adjacent room, with filler boards if needed. Yellow accents would be nice.

By the time you add the other cabinets, and a window treatment, there actually will be very little wall space left.

So, I would recommend my original idea of painting it the same color as adjacent room. There really is not enough wall space to make this room a different color and have any impact.

Toekicks should be white (same as cabinets).

Are you adding a backsplash? You should…….then, we are talking almost zero wall space to paint.

I agree that the yellow wall colour is not flattering. Expanding the taupe colour -- or even a shade lighter or shade darker -- will pull the rooms together and compliment the stone floor tile and counter. Once the cabinet doors are installed, I recommend that you take everything off the counters. Purchase -- or borrow from other rooms -- some accent pieces for the counters to give the room some character. I've found that I get the best feedback by trying something, and then taking a photograph. Since there are so many "square" shapes (cupboards, tiling, windows), I suggest hanging something round above the cooktop. Paintings &/or framed art won't fare well, so I'd look for a unique piece that can be regularly deep-cleaned (i.e. tile, fired pottery). The stainless steel oven, toaster, kettle and door handles are attractive, but unless you're aiming for a very modern, minimalistic scheme, I'd punch-up with coloured accents. Good luck! Try to remember that decorating is a process, and part of the fun is making changes over time and allowing your rooms to develop their own character.

You might want to consider doing a search on the web and finding an inspiration photograph to guide your design decisions.

Have you considered a Backsplash, the Yellow is a great color, what a Backsplash will do for you is pull the elements together.

I like kaywestmaas comment. If you paint your kitchen the same colour as the adjacent room, adding colourfull decoration will look great.

I changed from a light yellow to cappuccino that picked up the colour of the grout in the floor tiles.

I would go with a little bit bolder choice , like greyish or even charcoal...but nice one and not glossy...mid sheen.
You would definitely have to paint the window trims white as well.
I did my kitchen recently. Painted existing cabinets (beautiful sage green), black walls (yes...black walls) white trims ...hand scraped hardwood floors...(copper/ brown).
Still have to finish ceiling ...coiffured with black inside the squares...I had grey walls before (as in these old pic's).

I think that are you moving in the right direction. Keep the yellow until the space is finished. Never second guess yourself as you are moving forward. All finished elements will pull off the completed project. I completely agree with someone above that the range wall is too open. I assume you still have a range hood to install. You could probably flank that hood detail with another cabinet on the right side, above the under counter oven. I think once your space is finished, you will love your kitchen and your original design choices.

Thanks for all the comments. You've convinced me to change the yellow wall to canvas similar to the adjacent wall. Painting starts today. I have red curtains in the dining room (adjacent room). Would it be a good idea to take this colour into the kitchen? Maybe red bars stools, splashback and roman blind? I'm searching for a cooker hood at the moment, but haven't really found anything I like yet.

Yes. You need to coordinate any window treatments in the dining room with the kitchen. And, yes, bring in red accents. Not too much, though.

I would recommend the same paint color, not one similar. Similar better than yellow, though.

Yellow wall is gone and replaced with the same colour as the adjacent wall. I must add that you were all correct and it looks much better!
