Hi Judy. Mid century modern pieces would certainly fit in with the style and time period of your home, just stay away from some of the super-funky stuff if you don't like things too modern. Do you have a color palette in mind?

Thank you; re: color palette.. We'll remodel and put in a white kitchen.. not sure about counter and wall colors. The floors are light oak - we would like to stain them a bit darker..I like, greens, golds and reds as a general rule.

Find a rug you love with your colors in it. Stay with a transitional/contemporary look.

What colors would you recommend for transitional/contemporary and would plantation shutters work or would you recommend draperies. etc.

I love white kitchens! I would suggest keeping your countertops neutral as well (white or grays) so that they are timeless and allow you to change wall and accessory colors as you choose. Greens, golds, and reds are a really classic palette and I would suggest finding one piece, whether it's a rug (like iamjudy suggested), a chair, a piece of artwork, or whatever that you can pull inspiration from and build around.

IMO, plantation shutters are a good solution for windows. Hunter Douglas will coordinate with your whites. Will look beautiful.

I think shutters could work in a transitional style. For a more modern look you could paint the trim and shutters the same color as the wall, but in a semi-gloss.

Thank you; we were thinking of a quartz (white with a bit of gray running through it for counter tops..but were concerned it would be too white, but you are suggestion bringing the color in on the walls... we were also thinking of white or gray subway tile for the backsplash, but are not sure what to do with the floor in the kitchen that runs into the laundry room and the 1/2 bath? Your thoughts? I really appreciate you help.

Love this kitchen with the whites, as Chicago recommends. You could do the back splash in red tiles.

Thank you and I love the gray rug, wall color and Diane's sofa that you recommended. I think it changed my mind to more of a gray tan for the living areas..with white molding and plantation shutters painted the color of the walls as suggested by Chicago in semi-gloss - this palette is really coming together for me.

Great! Chicago and I seem to be on the same page and I love her suggestion, too, about painting the shutters.

I have never thought about shutters being anything but woodwork color and I just found this picture and Chicago is so right on….makes them much more contemporary.
