I've always dreamed of homeownership and now that we've moved in, I don't even know where to begin... Go figure :)

This is my first post with the Houzz community and I'm so excited to have everyone's input!

I've attached pictures of our living room (and the surrounding area). I'm not quite sure how to give it a little more color/life. There are huge picture windows/french doors opposite the living room and a really high ceiling. I was thinking about some art or some paint on the walls? I'm just worried that because the walls are so tall, the art will look too small.

The area to the right of the fireplace that's also very bare-- our house has turned into a great gathering place for friends and family so we have people visiting/parties quite often (even in the short 2 months we've been here) Maybe we should use it for additional seating?

The only design consideration would be that we have 3 dogs :) All ideas are greatly appreciated!
