We replaced the old sofas with this sectional which we love, and would like some idea of how to decorate the living room to add some color. We like the gray and previous sofas were burgundy leather. Any suggestions for color mix and accessories would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

The black & white tweed rug is too small. I'd place the cowhide rug where the tweed rug is, cowhide facing the same way the tweed rug is facing (opposite from the way the cowhide is facing now). The cowhide will add brightness and pattern to the area under & around the coffee table. Some of the cowhide might be hidden under the sectional, but that's OK. I'd remove the pillows & change the pillows to 2 fuzzy-furry white pillows as in this photo, keeping pillows only at the corner of the sectional

In front of the fuzzy pillows a smallish black and white geometric pillow as here

If you do not want the cowhide near the sofa, buy a larger area rug that goes 1/3 under each sofa and under the table. A basic sisal area rug would be nice in this color

I'd still keep the 2 fuzzy pillows but instead of a black and white geometric smallish pillow, a brown and white smallish geometric. I'd remove the black square table by the side of the sectional & center the decorative curio cabinet on the wall a little closer to the sectional. I'd remove the 3 clocks & hang them vertically as they are but on the bare wall in photo #1 between the 2 windows. Hang them about 6 inches lower than they are in photo # 2. I see 1 black & white vase and 2 black vases on the mantel and I'd place them on the coffee table. I cannot see what else is on the mantel, maybe you could take a closeup? I'd remove the art above the bar and place that resting on the center of the fireplace mantel. I'd angle the single chair slightly toward the mantel. Place the 2 bar stools closer together more toward the center of the bar. If the cowhide rug is remaining near the fireplace, turn it in the other direction (if it's now facing E/W, turn it N/S).

Thank you for all attention you gave to the pictures and for the detailed advice. I like the ideas you gave and indeed, the clocks, the art above the bar were not relocated after the previous arrangement in place was removed.

If i replace the cowhide and the small area rug (which is a leather shag on gray) with a larger area rug, wouldn't be a good match to get a more colorful rug? I was thinking the room is missing colors and almost all items are shades of whites and gray, brown, black, not much warmth!

I think it would be a darn shame to replace beautiful shag leather and the cowhide. Now that I know the "tweed" rug is shag leather, I think it is an OK size & would leave it just where it is. I think you are not used to the subtle beauty of the white, gray, brown, black after being used to the more colorful burgundy. How about a burgundy rug *under* the gray leather shag? This would give you some color you are craving. The burgundy would be like a border around the gray shag, but rather nice, I think. I'd keep the 2 fuzzy pillows and in front have a small geometric burgundy and white pillow.

I don't think your room needs color to warm it up. I think the grey walls are making the room feel cool. Try a warmer shade, or beige. If you really like the wall color and don't want to change it, then just add some pillows and art with a color you like. Maybe orange? I agree with j222b and think you should ditch the small rug and replace it with the cowhide.

j22, i love the gray thats why i chose most of the pieces like they are. I had a moment of doubt when i asked a few of the best friends and all would add some warm color(s). I figured maybe it's me the one that doesn't get it.
Thanks again for the wonderful insights and advices.
I wanted to add that I have a few large canvases i made of pictures i took in Hawaii (shades of gray ocean with a rainbow at sunrise) and a zebra head. would they fit in ? Should i use only the canvases on the wall and get rid of all other pieces?

in my opinion, you can hang a painting above the TV set, just like below

OK! I get it and you get it, you just need some new friends who get it (just kidding). I think the photos-on-canvas would be lovely. The clocks would go with those, you can add the clocks most anywhere, if you're running out of wall space: over the double french doors to the entry, over the 3 part window, maybe by the single chair (can't see). I don't think the other painting will go too well. Maybe place the zebra over the wall space in photo #1 where I suggested putting the clocks and the other 2 over the mantle. Or 1 on each side of the 3 part window and one above the mantel, with clocks above 3 part window. Make paper templates and arrange those first with masking tape.

I have to say you were born with these talents, my suggestion is that you put zebra painting over the mantel, and as for other parts, i think you have to do something on side of the windows, wall nearby the clocks and in front of the french doors .
