Hey do not despare! Your counter top is not half as bad you think it is.
Go for a country look for your kitchen. All you need is to choose the right color combos and you could end up having a warm, cozy country kitchen. For the walls I would suggest Behr Vintage Linen and Classic Gold. For a cabinets my advice would be Olive leaf , French Roast or Shallow wood from Behr.
In my view you wouldn't have to change the counter top as it will blend in perfectly with the suggested colors.
If your budget permits then you can explore the options of having a polished wooden floor.

I would go darker on the cabinets, I like your granite!
Goodness me if you hate the granite replace it! Why go changing everything else for one thing that you don't even like.
Ugly pink granite is only fine and not bad if you are a pompous person who has to have granite as a status symbol. We can't give that stuff away. It has nothing to do with being able to afford it. Painting everything white will not change that..... unless you are color blind.

Bowl of peaches on the counter, peach paint and a big poster of Princess Peach. Make fun not war.

Ok, My 2 cents worth. Work with what you have.
First- clean off all the counters, fridge etc and take another photo. Your kitchen is beautiful, but it is lived-in (cluttered)
Second- easy fixes- repaint, new and contemporary hardware for cabinet doors.
Third- instead of painting all the cabinets consider having glass or frosted glass panels in some of double doors ( the four over coffee maker) You can match the single door already glass or have them all done without mullions for a newer look. To see if you might like that- tape tracing paper to the front panels and see what you think. I did it to my 10 year old oak cabinets and love it..

If you want to change the doors of your cabinets at sometimes, I would not spend money on the kitchen until you are ready to buy a new counter top except painting the walls. This is cheap and has a great impact. I can't suggest a color that would help reduce the peach color because I am not good at it but many houzzers can.

It's the golden oak cabinets that are the problem, not the granite.
    bmmichel thanked groveraxle
groveraxle, do you have a quick way to do what you have with the photoshop of the cabinets. You did an excellent job. I don't know how to do it without spending hours.
groveraxle, do you mind doing a photoshop of the original cabinets but changing the color of the wall to the color below?

    and the island too.

groveraxle; you've got it! I didn't think of the darker finish on the cabinets, but either the dark or light would look so much better than " the age of Golden Oak"...

groveraxle THANK YOU! so nice of you to take time to help me visualize what it could look like. taking your time to help a random person is so nice. as I work with kids, I'll use their vernacular - YOU ROCK!

    white or antique/glaze

Go for the glazed white. Getting that color on there will make you feel totally different about your kitchen and you wont' see the peach anymore. That wood is clashing with it.

Actually, I just saw the dark grey someone posted. That is the way to go. Gorgeous!
bmmichel, if you were starting from scratch with stainless appliances, what type and color of cabinets would you choose? If you can work toward your ideal goal, then nothing is lost. Looking at what your kitchen would look like from afar gives you one perspective, but at the end of the day, when you are in your kitchen using it to prepare meals, you will always be looking straight down at the granite, not up at the cabinets.

I wish people would stop hating granite and declaring it passe. Select it carefully for its intrinsic beauty. I fully intended using quartz, but when the time came I realized I would be happier with granite for my particular kitchen and its location in the house. Marble isn't suitable for a cook who uses wine, lemons, vinegar, etc... Soapstone isn't either, especially if dark grey/black isn't what you want.
Your granite is fine. You need a backsplash. Go a black subway go up to cabinets. Paint a taupe with a gray undertone. Get samples try on your wall.
Paint island same as walls. Get 3-4 bar stools a black is nice. Remove all stuff from refrig. It just looks cluttered. Not nice.

I would paint the corbel brackets under the island countertop black.
I would try painting out the oak cabinetry. It is very dated. Use a nice warm mid tone gray on the bottom and a very pale gray on the uppers. Add some chrome and new hardware. An inexpensive way to help is to up date the lighting. It will be a bit of work but make a whole new kitchen. Take your time and do a good job with the prep work. You will love your whole kitchen
  • 12 years ago
I would like a medium gray backsplash. I don't hate your granite or your cabinets. But, white cabinetry ,gray subway tile backsplash and that granite with light gray walls would be stunning .
@suzanne_m, there is no easy way to paint cabinets in Photoshop except to cut them all out, paste them into a new layer, then use your color manipulation tools. It takes awhile, but the more you do it, the faster you get.
Thank you groveraxle. I suppose I will get it done faster and better. :)

How about this? Paint your cabs dark and the walls a bit lighter. Info included with this photo.

I'm not a granite person... It's too busy, don't care if it is expensive. However, since this is your first home, I would keep the granite, paint the cabinets a Swiss coffee (white) to brighten up the kitchen. It will look happier and not so heavy. When you can afford it, replace the countertops or remodel the kitchen if you want. As others have suggested, white cabinets will make a huge difference.

Peachy Keen by Benjamin Moore is listed here as a trending colour. Could use for walls.

You have a great kitchen! Dark gray cabs would tone that peach down .. add some nice pendants over the island & a great backsplash. Once you get rid of the oak cabinets, you will really like this space!
Paint the cabinets white and paint the bottom part of the island a soft color to match the wall color, very soft grey, white with a little blue
  • 12 years ago
Noticing the color of the tile floor, I like grover's rendering with dark cabinets better. If the floor was a dark wood, I'd choose white or gray cabinets but I think dark is the way to go with that floor.

Interesting discussion-- I think I have the same granite but the flesh tones barely show. I chose it and no, I don't really like it either. The main reason I don't like granite is because it's difficult to keep clean as nothing shows on it. I'm getting ready to paint my cabinets in BM's Sandy Hook gray for the bottom and a 1/4 saturation for the top. I'm also adding 4 pot lights and new cabinet hardware from www.myknobs.com. Good luck!

The peach in the granite is beautiful, warm and exquisite. It is the grey that gives it a colder look. I would darken the cabinets with a beautiful mahogany tone that will bring out the warm pink undertones in the granite.

I like your granite. I just think the cabinets need to be either painted in white or off white or darkened to a mahogany tone as suggested by lynnpacheco. It will make all the difference!

Post is a year old. Wonder what OP did...
OP here. Funny this thread became active again, as we are just now circling back to this project. Being first time homeowners we ended up prioritizing some other (easier decisions) projects. after living here a little over a year, finally beginning to move forward on the kitchen. Painted the kitchen and breakfast bump-out a lighter gray. will paint cabinets white, and have picked a "greige" glass subway tile for backslash. have started upgrading appliances to stainless steel. Thanks for all the help and recommendations!

Here is what I did with my granite.

The good news is that I have been able to keep my new year's resolution for over a year now :D

I think that the first and foremost problem is your kitchen wall color. it kills the cabinets and the granite.

your granite is beautiful. the white cabinets would be great, but I would paint those walls first.

    Good job, Fred!

here is what In would do.... paint the walls a very soft peach ,(softer than the peach in the granite) then the cabinets paint black to compliment the granite, maybe new handles and a very pretty back splash... will look great

Granite here is not cheap...I found a special deal about an hour from my house and paid a bit extra for the install-only two choice but I liked one.. home Depot and Lowe's as well as other stores did not have good prices... I hate to say it but I did look at quartz and honestly it looks like solid surface to me. I do have it in my bathroom because I liked a certain white. However, I chose a granite for the kitchen...sealed an warrantied. The Black, grey and white was lovely...houses here with granite sell very well. I do not plan to move but just in case I picked granite although I think the new laminates are great...there was only a few hundred dollars difference between the FX type laminate and the granite I chose.

my opinion is if you really don't like the granite, just bite the bitter oil and change it out now, because everything else you do to minimize it is not going to change the fact that you don't like it. if you can find the money, do it.
