Definitely wood...have you roasted marshmallows over gas? We also dug a deep drain so water doesn't collect inside.

Since I live in the country- of course we do wood fires. I like to hang out with family and friends...look at the stars...roast marshmallows and enjoy a cocktail or two. Nothing better than a roaring fire on a cold fall day.

Missed the deadline, but. I would rather build a RMH to toast on the exhaust mass heat transfer bench. Both do look nice.

I love the smell and sound of a wood fire, but in the desert Southwest, the flying embers will likely start a huge fire. So, the gas fire to me is the better choice. It is clean, it does not send embers into the air, and you can decorate it in ways not available to wood fires...colored glass, etc. And, unless you do not pay your gas bill, it is always available, unlike wood. It also has a consistent fire, so you do not have to stoke it or add more fuel.

I agree with a lot of what everyone says about wood fires have a nicer ambience, but where I live we have "no burn days" and a wood fire will get you a ticket. We go with gas rather than have no fire at all.

We will be installing an electric fireplace that looks like a contemporary gas fireplace - saw it first on HGTV, of course. I enjoyed my neighbor's wood fire pit, but one time it made so much smoke I called the fire department thinking that the woods behind us had been set on fire by teenagers enjoying an under age campfire. There was so much smoke when I opened the door that it never occurred to me it was coming from a mere fire pit a couple of hundred feet away. Our houses are zoned 2 to the acre. Dense enough to bother the neighbors. After the "smokey" house experience, I scratched my own plans to build a fire pit, and one day may run a gas line through the back yard for a barbecue, fire pit, and ?

Good for you lefty!!! Maybe you won some cool BBQ tools? ;)

Nothing quite replaces a real wood fire, especially outside. A gas fire pit, as long as you're not expecting it to be the same as wood, works too. It's sort of like having 1/2 your cake and eating it too. Fire with no smoke in your eyes or having to split wood.
I love the look of the fire glass in the gas fire pit. Less work to do.
Gas would be easy but there's nothing that says summer like the smell of woodsmoke.
I voted for gas. When I go outside to sit by the fire, I don't want to smell like smoke when I come inside. We are never without breezes and the smoke inevitably finds me. I do love a wood fire though. Something about that crackling fire that can't be beat.
wood is cozy, gas is smelly. Wood is natural, gas is just a man-made replacement for the old fashioned campfire.

I definitely prefer wood. I have a wood burning fireplace and fire pit. Smells wonderful, looks beautiful, and I think wood provides more heat.

We have a huge pit down a lighted path behind the barn. Now, we will put one out in the planned garden down in front woods at the new house.

There is just something magical about the scent of burning logs
  • 12 years ago
I love wood burning! The smell is amazing, provides more heat, gives a natural crackle and I wouldn't want to eat marshmallows on a gas burning. With wood burning there's different types of wood you can burn and gas, well there's just gas. Gas just isn't authentic enough for me.

I had loved the burning of leaves as a youngster and the scent from the wood burning fireplace in my first home. In this Townhome, we are not allowed, well, anything! So - WOOD BURNING is my vote !

Can't Canandians receive American prizes? Doesn't seem fair, lefty47, plus the prize seems a bit on the small side!

Love a natural wood fire but hate the messy ashes. Gas fires with glass or faux branches can be warm and provide ambiance without the mess.

Wood crackles and smells great but it takes time to light, it takes wood to burn, it needs cleaning... I really like the wood burning fire pits but think that I would use a gas fire pit more often.
both. We have a wood stove for those really chilly nights when gas and electric won't cut it, and we have a free standing gas stove that maintains the constant temp. In the mountains we get frequent power outages, so wood stoves are essential, since gas thermostats and fans won't work without electricity.
I have a gas pit now and we love it. no Smokey hair and clothes. and it's a quick turn it on for a while and shut it off. no worries of hot coals starting fires where they are unwanted. we have thought about making a pan to sit on top to build a real wood fire in on occasion. but haven't had time to figure that out.
Mmmm there is just something about wood! Since we live in the country, we abandoned our gas grill more than 10 years ago and cook almost all of our summer meals on a fire pit we built.

Do you cook on your wood burning firepit? If so, what type of wood do you usually use?
I go with Vision Design's comment. people gather around the wood fire, take turns to throw on a log, toast the marshmallows. Winter becomes a lovely warm get together.
I only roast marshmallows - no matter what type of fire!

Ease of flipping a switch works for our hectic lifestyle here in the city. When we are up north the aroma of a real wood fireplace is intoxicating to me.

We just installed a 3 sided gas fireplace.....I love wood too but gas is more efficient and easier to use. Favourite thing to do around it is to enjoy a nice glass of wine with my fiancee.

I love wood burning fireplaces. Ours was wood burning but it was such a pain to set up and clean up that we put in a gas fireplace kit. Now we can just turn it on when we want a fire and we use it a lot more often because it's so easy.
