Colourblind landlord left us...:

Hi there,

We are moving into a new flat and it comes with some light yellow and one stoney green wall (this one I like) and massive chunky black chenille sofas. We cant paint nor ditch the sofas. Also, as the tenancy is for two years only, we dont want to throw lots of money at it.
Any tips on how to make this sitting area less unappealing?

The sofas are very square and big (David Philips, model New York) and I have been trying but unable to find fitting slipcovers. Any tips very welcome!

The curtains we'll put in storage.

Help much appreciated!

Why not find pillows with patterns in the paint colors and couch colors. Varied patterns would add interest. Is your T.V. going against the green wall? I would put it offside and then put pictures around it - a 'Gallery Wall' of sorts. I am also a big fan of buying a colored curtain - say a green one then color blocking on the bottom with the cream or black - you could even take the color down the side where the curtains open? For your T.V. if it's not to be hung on the wall possibly use a black book shelf on it's side for the T.V. stand. Better yet find an old dresser etc., paint it black, for the T.V. stand. Good luck. It really is a nice floor plan and it can work.

What other furnishings are going in the room? Does the room have to accommodate dining? Maybe some photos of the whole wall with the window and a view to the other end of the room.

I wish I had taken more at the viewing but these are all I have. I am standing in the middle, behind me is a section that is the same size and has a same sized window. There we will place our wooden off white dining set (modern by BoConcept). We also have a big natural sisal rug, dark (near black) bookshelves and a Beccara wooden coffee table that would have to go in the section shown. Thats it really so I will have to buy some things but not sure what. Maybe a nice sideboard or something as there's no fireplace. But what colour..? I am so lost. Feels like the sofas are the problem but not sure..

Of course it depends on your taste but I would just put a couple of throw blankets over the sofas. Something like this but probably in a different colour:

Thank you both so much for your thoughts! I am def going to look into a good throw and some pillows. Maybe a dainty chair or something.. Like the 'gallery' idea of frames as may balance out the massive dark sofas a bit if I use some darker frames. There's a bit of hope, thank you!

If you saw the little 1940's bungalow I purchased that had been a rental up and down for over 20 years you'd know that there is always hope. I love the DIY aspect and making a problem work out for the better. Smile and go into the challenge knowing YOU CAN DO IT!!!! :)

Will there be a large tv in the room? That makes a natural focal point.
BTW, it looks like one set of black is actually two chairs, not a sofa. Are you sure there are two black sofas?

No problem irisvr! I can see how such a bare room could be somewhat daunting to turn into a home. Apple_pie_order I think that's just the really tiny two-seater that David Philips do.

Oh and yes theres a medium sized flat screen going in there but I think I might put that on a wooden crate in the right corner as the cables are there and I think I'd prefer some art or picture frames to be the focal point upon entrance rather than the tv. Maybe I should put my stuff in next week and post new pics to get some input again if you'd be so kind:)

Why not just go with the flow? Start with new window treatments that have the yellow, green and black incorporated?
